AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell comes Slow Dance--her smartest, funniest, most powerful novel yet

"If you, like me, think thirty-somethings methodically working through their issues is very hot, Slow Dance is the book for you. The people in it feel like people you know or maybe even people you've been. Slow Dance is sexy, sweet, wise, and nostalgic--Jane Austen's Persuasion for our times."

-- Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times bestselling author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

Shiloh Butler was supposed to get out of north Omaha.

She used to sit out on the front porch with her best friend, Cary, and plot their escape. Shiloh was going to be an actress - she had a scholarship to a good school - and Cary was laser-focused on the Navy. Sharp, stoic, golden-eyed Cary . . . thin as a stick of gum and poor as dirt. He was probably the most decent person Shiloh has ever known. She hasn't spoken to him in fourteen years.

When Shiloh gets an invitation to a high school friend's wedding, Cary is the first and only thing on her mind.

She desperately wants to see him again, but she doesn't know if she can bear being seen by him. What would Cary think of Shiloh at thirty-three? A divorced mom living in the same house she grew up in. Someone who works behind a desk, not onstage.

Would Cary even want to see Shiloh after all this time? After everything?

The answer, it turns out, is yes.

In her triumphant return to adult fiction, Rainbow Rowell has written a love story so honest and human - so cathartic - you'll feel it in your bones. Slow Dance is a power ballad of a book, brimming with Rowell's signature compassion and wit. It's deeply affecting and profoundly romantic.

This broke my dry spell

This book intrigued me because I recognized the author as a journalist from years ago. It was a great book that broke my dry spell. I could easily see this book being a movie.

Some good parts and some disappointing aspects.

I went into this book wanting to love it, but I struggled to do so with some parts. Shiloh and Cary are best friends who love each other but don't know the other feels the same. Standard story with a predictable ending. That's what I signed up for, and that's not the disappointing part.Shiloh was a bit insufferable. Cary holds a grudge when others are not able to read his mind. Even at 33 years old, they still act like children at times when their feelings are involved. In other areas, they behave as responsible adults taking care of their obligations.I liked the before-and-after timeline, but it didn't follow a chronological order, which could be a bit confusing at times.Chapters 67-69 were poorly written in comparison to the rest of the novel and didn't match the style.Overall, I'm glad I read it and enjoyed many parts of it, but the novel didn't give me the same joy as "Eleanor & Park."

Pretty good

Cary and Shilo's high School story... You remember as you read when you felt that way. When you were head over heels for someone who was probably completely in love with you, but you assumed they weren't and never said anything. Rainbow Rowell books always do that... Remind you how it was to feel the way the characters in the books feel.

I’m in love with Carey!

I’m not sure how I feel, but it’s a great feeling! It’s that feeling of finishing a good book. Time well spent getting to know these characters! They won’t make me rich, or improve my health, but I was transported out of this crazy reality and into the lives of these characters that were rooting for! I love reading! I know it doesn’t say much about the story, but Rainbow Rowell, your stories take me places!
