In her first nonfiction book in a decade, the #1 bestselling writer who taught millions of readers to live authentically (Eat Pray Love) and creatively (Big Magic) shows how to break free.

In 2000, Elizabeth Gilbert met Rayya. They became friends, then best friends, then inseparable. When tragedy entered their lives, the truth was finally laid bare: The two were in love. They were also a pair of addicts, on a collision course toward catastrophe.

What if your most beautiful love story turned into your biggest nightmare? What if the dear friend who taught you so much about your self-destructive tendencies became the unstable partner with whom you disastrously reenacted every one of them? And what if your most devastating heartbreak opened a pathway to your greatest awakening?

All the Way to the River is a landmark memoir that will resonate with anyone who has ever been captive to love--or to any other passion, substance, or craving - and who yearns, at long last, for liberation.

I adored every F ing page!

This book is sacred for anyone that has struggled with addiction of any kind and/or codependent relationships. I admire Elizabeth for the courage it took to share at this level and depth. I laughed and I cried. As a woman that is divorced, single (by choice), 56, and 24 years without a drink of alcohol, I deeply valued what she shared about meeting the little girl that lives inside of you and taking care of her as a gift of her recovery. I want to deepen my recovery as a result of reading this book. What a treasure. Thank you.

Manipulative shock

The problem is that Rayya is just not even close to being likable. And Gilbert isn’t far behind here.Yes, memoir authenticity is important. But one has to weigh the costs.

Brave, Brutal, Brilliant!

This is a memoir that's hard to put down, pun intended, and is one that is sure to spur real + raw conversations amongst womxn and book club peeps for years to come.Liz Gilbert takes the reader on a tangled and emotional roller coaster ride to the very edge of what it means to be a messy human navigating love, loss, secrets, shame, and addictive & co-dependent tendencies amidst the tireless grips of longing.I smiled, laughed, worried, cried, cringed, cheered, and recognized myself on the page more than a few times in her compelling narrative about her relationship with Rayya Elias that is equal parts elegy, love story, cautionary tale, and harrowing (she)ro's journey.I can't wait for all my gal pals to read All the Way to the River so we can talk about the many important and universal truths she was courageous enough to lay bare in the public sphere.
