New flavors to old favorites

The organization of this book is truly clever. What are you in the mood for? Isn’t that at the heart of a craving? Just like when you’re hungry, but none of your options appeal to you, CRAVEABLE aptly identifies what need your meal is striving to satisfy. Seema’s recipes are very adaptable, and she offers numerous substitutions and alternatives, so you are likely able to make a particular recipe from ingredients already in your pantry if you don’t have on hand exactly what she is calling for. She pushes the envelope on flavors, but in a good way. Canned chipotles in a beef ragu with pappardelle; cola baby back ribs with tamarind paste - it all works beautifully. Seema is very skilled at incorporating new flavors into familiar favorites. Many of the recipes use fresh produce readily available. Her scissor-cut pasta method is a real revelation in how you can have from-scratch fresh pasta for dinner in roughly a half hour. The brioche bun emergency birthday cake is a perfect portion when you are craving something sweet, as the chapter is titled. My favorite recipe of all, however, is the Tarragon Chicken in the Comfort chapter, which is simple, flavorful and elevated, making the most of an underutilized herb. I find myself craving this unique dish weekly now! Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book to cook from; the opinions and experiences are my own. I am happy to have been introduced to Seema Pankhania, and will look forward to the creative recipes she develops in the future.

Truly fun and delicious recipes!

First off, I loved how Craveable is structured - sure, there is a more "traditional" index, but seeing if you're craving "something fresh" "something sweet" "something salty" instead is such a fun (and realistic!) way to go about it. There is even a section with 10 min meals (Doritos chilaquiles, anyone??).I did not now much about Seema's story before getting this book, but it's a beautiful one of perseverance and discovery in the kitchen. Her recipes are precise, but also accessible and fun.The "something sweet" section is my favorite, so far. I found myself bookmarking things left and right - the famous brownies, fudgy banana bars (I also have too many bananas!),the sour gummylike Tangfastic cream filling for her doughnuts... that said, I am off to make the Hainanese Salmon Rice right now. It's a riff on a chicken rice and a very "Seema" recipe.Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own.

Beautiful and delicious

Ten Speed Press provided me with a free copy of this book; the opinions are my own. This chef was inspired by her mom, who cooked mostly Indian fresh food everyday when she was growing up. One of my favorite things about this book is the chart on spice levels and substitutions. We are not a spicy family and I don’t have all the spices used in this book. The substitution chart can be applied to all your cooking! No need to buy a spice you won’t use often. The coconut key lime pie was amazing and beautiful baked in a fluted tart pan. The French onion gnocchi is delicious and great for a dinner party. Once assembled, it bakes in the oven, so easy to serve, and is something different. This is a beautiful book that will get you out of your comfort zone!
