Evenings and Weekends

A well-written story with lots of interesting parts and character development. My main complaint would be that not a whole lot seemed to happen and the story was fairly slow at times. This definitely wasn't a book that kept me glued to the pages, but it's also worth a read.

Most of the times queer books, focus on the queer world so much, and you cannot see like straight people‘s lives in it at all and I think that makes the book unrealistic, but in Evenings and Weekends the writer have observed both straight and queer community so well. When I was reading the book I felt like I was in this book’s universe, and also having so many different types of characters in the book from different ages, and from different phases of their lives were so impressive and important. It really amazed me that seeing so many different point of views and perspectives from different angles. I love this book. I hope one day they make a TV show of it.

Book came quickly and in perfect shape, but the contents.... This book follows 8 characters through one hot weekend in London. One weekend. Eight characters. One beached whale. Fever dream of a book, but also so queer and thoughtful and you walk away understanding everyone. No heroes, no villains, just people, doing their best.

Nothing really happens in this novel, but a lot of time is spent examining feelings, being conflicted, being angry, using drugs, and sometimes having sex but not always enjoying it.

EVERYTHING you’ve heard about this book being incredible is true.I don’t want to give away much more than what’s in the synopsis because I want everyone to let this story unfold upon them like it did me.I feel seen, I feel differently about my own life, and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

The first four oages of this book are simply the most depressing writing I've read in years. The book was so depressing I couldn't finish it.

This novel dropped late onto my summer reading list and I'm so glad it did. E & W is a fast paced journey through a period of time in the characters lives. Very well written and satisfying -- fun read for a quick weekend trip or a couple of days on the beach

If you like slice of life books, you'll enjopy this one as well. It was so easy to relate to the inner thoughts of most of the characters here.

Evenings and weekends is a sometimes profound but always astute portrait of real people in real situations. I was so extremely impressed and quite moved. As someone with a PhD in Comparative Literature, i sometimes feel as if I've read every book in English, French, German and Russian. Toward that end, I did truly perceive echoes of Ivan Turgenev in the novel. I was gripped by Rosaleen as she struggles toward a kind of personal authenticity, honesty, and a proper family balance. If you value good literature, you must read the novel. It's practically perfect in every way (to quote Mary Poppins): Theme, motifs, characterization, and plot. I saw almost no similarities to Sally Rooney, whose novels tend to curve into themselves and leave me baffled. Buy this book and start reading it today. Oisin McKenna is a writer to watch.

If you're Sally Rooney fan and a complicated gay with straight friends this is for you. I enjoyed it, solid 4/5.

Evenings and Weekends is a charming gem of a debut novel. Over a swelteringly hot weekend in London, we follow several linked characters as they navigate secrets, their careers, and their futures.Maggie is thirty, pregnant, and uncertain of her path forward. Ed is her boyfriend, and he is barely making ends meet and is struggling with his identity. Phil is Maggie's best friend, and he knows things about Ed that no one else does.There were several other characters, and I was pleasantly surprised by how seamless the story moved from one person to the next. It was also somewhat addictive because I always looked forward to reading how these storylines connected. Overall, this was a fun, unique new novel.

this book is worth the hype and deserving of a sally rooney comparison (when not many books really are). this book is a beautiful depiction of the chaos and emotional turmoil thrumming in london heat, interpersonal connection, the ways we struggle to express ourselves and our love to others

The cover made me want to read this book. I wanted to see what the story was about because of the cover. I found a ton of characters and a heatwave in London. There were trials and relationships explored. McKenna had a great idea for a novel.
