NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Read with Jenna Book Club Pick as Featured on Today - "Everything a romantic comedy should be: witty, relatable, and a little complicated."--People
A heartfelt debut about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who's lost her husband and a major league pitcher who's lost his game.
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR
In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband's death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn't correct them.
Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy's childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips" he can't throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can't figure out why. As the media storm heats up, an invitation from Andy to stay in Maine seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button on Dean's future.
When he moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie's house, the two make a deal: Dean won't ask about Evvie's late husband, and Evvie won't ask about Dean's baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken--and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. To move forward, Evvie and Dean will have to reckon with their pasts--the friendships they've damaged, the secrets they've kept--but in life, as in baseball, there's always a chance--up until the last out.
A joyful, hilarious, and hope-filled debut,Β Evvie Drake Starts Over will have you cheering for the two most unlikely comebacks of the year--and will leave you wanting more from Linda Holmes.

I read other reviews saying this book was too slow, that someone couldnβt understand her writing; etc. I didnt find any of that to be the case for me. This book was the story of a small town in New England and the people in it and their ways. it was wonderful. The love story was paced realistically and paralleled the growth of both main characters after their own tragedies. I liked this story and how the author portrayed it so much, Iβve favorited her and placed another two of her books on hold. Great job!
So sweet. So proud of Evvie and the way she grew by the end. Most of the book, I very much wanted her to end up with Dean but at one point I wanted her to just be independent and doing her own thing. I think it ended perfectly though. A well done story that covers complicated romantic relationships, complicated parent relationships, failure, therapy & mental health, starting over and happily ever after.
Once I started reading this book, I realized that I had read it before but that didn't stop me from reading it again. Everything that happened again and reading such a good story was fine with me because I enjoyed the writing and the storylie.
The story of two people, both at turning points in their life. If you love books that are well written with thoughtful and thought provoking dialogue you will like this book. It truly is a journey. I enjoyed it but would have welcomed a bit more of the characters thoughts about each other. Itβs odd that with all the thoughts about their history and their situations, what they were thinking about each other wasnβt clear.
I enjoyed reading this book! These emotional characters were filled with a great amount of depth, their background gave so much more to the development of the storyline which is solid and a consistent page turner. The story flowed easily throughout the pages. A must read!
