An instant New York Times bestseller!

House of the Dragon  meets From Blood and Ash in this epic, scorching dark romantasy.

A conqueror captivated...
A witch prophesied to save them all...
An unforgiving world where dragons rule Rome.

Julian Dakkia, Roman general and nephew to the emperor, has played his role as conqueror well. Yet, the moment he laid eyes on Malina, he was enthralled by the Dacian dancer. Years later, the fierce beauty stands before him, a captive on a scarred battlefield, her life in danger. He instinctively shifts into his fierce dragon form to save her, an action that may mean his head on the imperial gate.

The rules of their world dictate that he is the conqueror and she is the captured. But he and his dragon know one thing: their bond has nothing to do with the laws of mighty Rome. She belongs to them. And they belong to her.

Fierce and powerful, twenty-one-year old Malina has survived the loss of her family and she is determined to fight until her dying breath. Still, she can't believe that the centurion who had once bestowed a secret talisman on her is the Roman general of legendary brutality...and now holds her life in his hands. Nor can she deny how her soul has always seemed to answer his. Slowly she learns that Julian is caught in his mad uncle's machinations for domination, and helps him plot the downfall of the empire itself.

As they navigate a world where flying deathriders conquer and burn, their love will ignite a firestorm that can only end in heartbreak or death. Or both.

Firebird  is an adult romantasy novel that contains dark themes, including slavery in Ancient Rome, which may be uncomfortable for some readers.

A good read!

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.5This was a really good read! Ive heard quite a bit of controversy going around about this book. Here is my opinion after completing it:I saw trigger warnings for this book on the authors IG, but they are not listed in the book. I think this is where many got upset. If you don’t read dark books, you’re in for a wild ride.I thought the Master/Slave relationship trigger warning was referring to BDSM (I was wrong). This takes place in Ancient Rome and the female main character becomes a slave.I saw dragon and witch romance and was sold! A Roman General (Julian) and a Dacian Witch (Malina) are destined to be together and all isn’t as it seems. Everything Julian does is for Malina and the people of Rome. Julian does not force Malina to do anything against her will.I would like to add:Many have mentioned that the FMC is underaged and a person of color. This isn’t true. I do think it’s important that we read the entire book before it is reviewed. As for the slave portion of this book- it is a fictional book that takes place in Ancient Rome. They had slaves. So many popular fantasy books have slaves in them. It’s a common themes I’m not sure why this author is getting so much hate.

it was well worth the wait!!!

I first read this book when a sample was sent out and I couldn’t wait to read the rest. It did not disappoint. The next book come out in a few months and I already have it on preorder. The plot, the MMC and FMC are sooo good. I feel that the next book will be new MMC and FMC. I can’t wait to hear their story. Well done Juliette! Well done!

4.5⭐️ but I’ll round up!

I did not expect to love this book as much as I did! Think ancient Roman Empire and Roman mythology plus dragons. Just enough spice to keep it interesting and up the romance aspect. Overall, I absolutely loved the story. It was a fantastic listen, and I am looking forward to the second book!

For fans of dark Romantasy with political intrigue

“She may have been a slave, but she looked at me like I was the one in chains.”Firebird is a dark, slow-burning romantasy that blends Roman-inspired political intrigue, dragon-shifter lore, and mythology in a way that feels both familiar and fresh. As the first book in The Fire That Binds series, Juliette Cross sets the stage for a dangerous empire where power, prophecy, and rebellion all clash and at the heart of it is a forbidden bond between a Dacian empath and a Roman dragon general. While the love interest is known from the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the slow burn was executed. There’s a simmering tension between the leads that had me hooked. One side feels the pull instantly, while the other goes through layers of denial, fear, and rejection. It felt believable and well-earned. Despite the enemies-to-lovers dynamic, nothing felt rushed or forced, which is a testament to Cross’s pacing and character development.I’m a sucker for dual POV, and this one delivered exactly what I was hoping for. Seeing both internal struggles and emotional growth really deepened my connection to the characters. Even with one character being clearly “all in” from the start, their journey still felt full of angst and growth. The Medusa and Olympian god lore was another element I really enjoyed as it added a unique twist to the world-building and brought in a level of mysticism that felt ancient and powerful. I’m definitely curious to see how that aspect expands in future books. As for the male main character? Dragons are already peak fantasy, but a possessive dragon shifter? Irresistible. No one does intense, all-consuming devotion quite like a dragon, and Cross leans into that in the best way without crossing into toxic territory. The story’s pacing is on the slower side, but that actually worked in its favor. It gave space for the emotional stakes, the worldbuilding, and the tension to build naturally. There were moments I wished for slightly more action or urgency, but overall, there was just enough plot movement to keep me engaged and eager to see what’s coming next.If you enjoy dark romantasy with forbidden love, strong mythological underpinnings, dual POV, and dragon-shifter obsession… this is one worth picking up.I’ll absolutely be continuing the series!

Not as bad as folks make it out to be

I enjoyed the historical fantasy setting - and the lore of the dragons! Especially appreciated Proserpina and Minerva. The romance was a bit insta-lusty, but I suppose that makes sense with fated mates? This was my first shifter book. I know there's some controversy about the main romance, but after reading everything in context, it didn't seem as bad as folks were making it out to be.The text was easy to read, and I was sucked into the plot. Will be looking into the next book in the series.

I loved everything about this book!

This was an amazing book. It was captivating and the world building was so amazing. I loved the characters and the bond between them. I even loved the side characters. They were well fleshed out and just so much fun to read about. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Read the trigger warnings and decide for yourself.

3.75 stars rounded up. This was a pretty straightforward story. Not much tension, which is the reason for 3.75 stars rather than a solid 4 stars. Those who are giving this book low marks because of the master-slave relationship shouldn't be reading this book in the first place. This actually isn't even a true master-slave relationship given Malina's gift. Those actually looking for a master-slave dark romance will likely be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively quick pace of the book since the last book I read by this author dragged on way too long. Her writing style has improved.

Don't believe the naysayers! Great book!

Nicole:This book is not only beautiful but it is beautifully written.I don't get the bad word of mouth it was getting on other platforms in regards to the slave/master issue. Not only does the author write a clear trigger warning at the very beginning of the book, you have to actually read the book to understand what is going on. Likewise I have seen reviews upset about her age. The young woman, Malina, is 17 turning 18 at the beginning of the book, nothing truly happens, until 4 whole years later, when she is either 21 or 22.The books dives deep into the injustices of slaves and the dragons who own them. The main character, Julian, coming to terms with how he feels about the situation and what he would do to keep his Firebird.I would say if you are sensitive to the trigger warnings stated in the front of the book, don't read it. Otherwise, read at your own risk. I'm throughly enjoying the book myself. I love books that have many short chapters as someone with ADHD it helps me get through the books faster and not give up on them.

It was exactly what you expected it to be

The story was good, I liked the characters, especially Malina, she was not a simpering flower unless she was pretending. The world building was great, a good blend of fantasy and history without one overshadowing the other. The spice was decent when it finally happened. Overall, I liked the book, but I don't think I would do a reread, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.

I thought this book was great

I think the low ratings for this book are due to bad marketing on the publishers. People are upset about the master/slave relationship. However, it’s really more of cover a to keep Malina safe. He never treats her or his other slaves poorly. The relationship is entirely consensual. She often initiates their intimate moments.I understand that people are maybe uncomfortable with the difference in power dynamics. But to rate it one star because you were surprised at the master/slave relationship does not seem fair to the author.

Wonderful start to a new dark romantacy series!

I saw so many mixed reviews on this about the slave and master issue and frankly, I don’t understand why anyone had trouble with it based on the author’s very clear statement at the beginning addressing it. If that bothers you at all, then move on, but for the rest of us that can appreciate a solid dark fantasy with dragons set in Ancient Rome you’ll enjoy this! I already loved Juliette’s witch series and although this has a very different vibe, it was a great read. It has a solid and satisfying end with a nice foreshadowing of what’s next. The relationship between Malina and Julien evolves in a way that seems fated, yet evolves slowly and naturally. I had no problem with how their relationship was portrayed and liked their dynamic. The action is good and the side characters are well written.Looking forward to the next installment!

The detail to world building.

This was a quick read—think Spartacus meets dragons, but on the lighter side. It blends an enemies-to-lovers trope with Roman Empire vibes, mythical gods, and dragons. The pacing is a very slow burn, which may work for some, but didn’t fully capture me. That said, the deluxe book cover is stunning and well-designed. Overall, while it had intriguing elements, I won’t be continuing the series.

Just what I Iove from JC

I adore the Stay a Spell series, so when Juliette Cross announced she was diving into romantasy, I was all in—and this did not disappoint. The overall feeling of this book had a darker tone than the more lighter books I’ve read by JC. However, I think she was still able to incorporate some of the whimsical into these darker components, which still made it uniquely her style. This offers a fresh, captivating twist on the Roman Empire, with a richly imagined world where dragon shifters rule.I loved the blend of political tension, and courtly intrigue with Malina and Julian’s romance. I was completely drawn into their story, constantly on edge, and eager to see what fate had in store for them.Malina and Julian’s pairing had an undeniable spark—That combination of the forbidden with touch her and die will ALWAYS give me tingles.I just loved the vibes of this book and judging by the way it ended, I’m really excited for the next book in the series.

DARK romantasy

This book blends history and fantasy beautifully together. As fantastical as the dragon shifters are they just fit so well into Ancient Rome. I don’t know why I didn’t realize this was going to be a trilogy but I’m so excited to see where the rest of the story goes!Your mental health matters and while this is an amazing book it is a dark romantasy. Some of the dark themes include a master/slave relationship, violence and gore, attempted SA, and dubious consent. My personal opinion is this book has a lot of similarities between other abduction romances. However this is a sensitive topic and if you uncomfortable with this power dynamic then this isn’t the book for you. Without spoiling anything I’ll just say our FMC has more power than you think!

Checked my boxes!

Dragon Shifters ✅Romance ✅Heroes & Villians ✅Fated & Prophecied ✅Roman Mythology ✅Touch her and die ✅4.5 stars! Captivating twist on Roman history! It’s like a tossed salad of what if’s that worked! Things we know that make it familiar but moved around to keep it interesting. Stuff that may trigger a reader is that the FMC is captured by the MMC and becomes his slave. He is not the villain and has an important role to play. Just keep reading! I understand that Rome had slavery and infanticide, and thought that these things were important to the plot and for future books. Overall it was a fast paced book and easy to figure out plot points. I sincerely hope all the negative feedback doesn’t prevent future books because I am looking forward to the rest of the series and can’t wait for the purging of evil by prophesied sisters!

Do not believe the naysayers

There is alot of talk surrounding this book and it being marketed incorrectly or problematic. Please read the book and decide for yourself. My take on the book - It was a solid story with great potential for building more depth in the subsequent books. While the relationship between the two leads does happen a little too quickly for my tastes, I did not find it problematic as some are claiming. Will you jive with the characters? Perhaps. Read the book and find out for yourself.Spoilers ahead... don't read on if you don't want spoilers.Debunking some of the criticisms...1. The two leads do not have a physical relationship when the FMC is a minor2. The MMC does not force her to do anything physical with him (yes there is a real world dynamic of master and sl9ve but he does not use that to make her be physical with him)3. The warning at the beginning is sufficient to describe what occurs in the book and was not misleading (I never once thought this was a dark romance or marketed as such). If I have a criticism for the warning it is that using "dubious consent" to summarize some things that happen in the book was a bit of a cop out.4. The MMC does not unalive the FMC family.5. The collar thing was not a sub/dom thing and was done for all sl9ves in the book to identify the house they belonged to.There are so many more points I could go over but then I would ruin the book. Bottom line, this is a book that is set in ancient Rome and the practices at that time should not be viewed in a present day lense. If you want to read a story that has modern day themes, then don't read a book set in ancient Rome. If you truly want to know what happened in this book - read it yourself please.

Dragon Shifter Romantasy

3.75 ⭐3 🌶️While it took me a while to get into the story, and the world building could use some work, I enjoyed it!!Firebird by Juliette Cross is a dark fantasy romance set in Ancient Rome.💢Check your trigger warnings before reading.I originally wanted to read this because, well, Dragons! I didn't expect dragon shifters! This was my first and I definitely plan on reading more of them!I know many people have issues with this being a slave/master relationship but I don't see it as that at all. Yes the Mmc is a general in the Roman army and the enemy of our Fmc but there is alot more to him.All in all this was a decent start to a new series and I will definitely be reading more. I expect we'll learn more about the world, magic, and the roman gods in future books.

Dragon Shifters

Set in the world of ancient Rome, Firebird offers a fantasy filled alternate framing of centurions by imagining them as dragon shifters. At the heart of the story is Julianus, general and nephew to Caesar, and Malina, the Dacian dancer and witch who has enthralled him since the moment he first saw her. Years later, after being captured on the battlefield, she's a salve in his house. But he treats her like anything but.Read if you like:-Dragon Shifters-Ancient Rome-Witches & Magic-Enemies to Lovers-Fated Mates-Plotting and SchemingI'm obsessed with Firebird! It's epic. Familiar yet new. Romantic and suspenseful. Be prepared to have this book be your new Roman Empire. Literally and figuratively. Malina was my favorite character. I loved her spirit and strength. And who wouldn't want a possessive dragon shifter like Julianus as a book boyfriend? While they were the focus of the book, Juliette also had a vibrant cast of supporting characters and left the overarching plot unfinished, setting the stage for more in this series. And this is definitely one you are going to want on your TBR.This is a review of the audiobook.

Ancient Rome, but the patricians are DRAGONS!

This was a fascinating fantasy world, with a basis in ancient Rome, but where the patricians are DRAGONS!Malina is a dancer, along with her sisters and others, in a traveling troupe. One night, 3 Romans show up to their performance, and Malina is both scared by, and attracted to, their leader. They have an immediate connection, though Malina is reluctant to acknowledge it. She thinks she'll never see him again.4 years later, Julian is now a general, and one of the most powerful dragons in Rome. He unexpectedly sees Malina again, in the aftermath of a battle he's just won. She's in danger, and he immediately reacts. He had an inkling of what she was to him the first time they met, but now, he knows for sure. He can't let her go.The only way to keep Malina, and to keep her safe in Rome, is to bring her into his household as a slave. He is the emperor's nephew, and he cannot be seen to be breaking any laws. Malina wants to hate him, but the connection she feels to him can't be denied, and the magic inside her won't let her ignore their tether.Their chemistry was off the charts, even when they tried to fight it. They cared for each other so much, and at times that was painful for both of them. As the reader, I suffered right along with them. And when they finally did connect, it was FIRE!This story definitely dealt with darker themes, and power dynamics. The worldbuilding was obviously heavy, as book 1 in a series, but it all felt vital. Many of the side characters were wonderful, and the villains were truly heinous. It definitely made me feel all my feelings! I really enjoyed myself while reading, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book already! Based on some things in this book, I'm really hoping I know who the heroine of book 2 will be...

A Romantasy Set in an Alternate History of the Roman Empire with Dragons

Firebird is the first book in Juliette Cross' new series, The Fire That Binds, and it definitely delivered! Set in an alternate version of Roman history where dragons rule as the patrician class, this book offers a fascinating and unique twist on the romantasy genre. The world-building is rich, drawing readers into a society that feels both ancient and fantastical. One of the things I loved most was how the characters' relationship unfolded against the backdrop of an oppressive empire. Malina, the FMC, is part of a rebel uprising, and Julian, the MMC, is a Roman general sent to crush the rebellion. Their chemistry is electric, and the slow-burn romance is equally compelling as they navigate political intrigue, personal stakes, and the looming threat of a tyrannical empire.Juliette Cross does an excellent job of capturing the harsh realities of Roman society—especially the treatment of women and the brutal consequences of rebellion. The story doesn’t shy away from the darkness of the era, and that means there are tough moments throughout. The portrayal of the patriarchal society is raw, and for those unfamiliar with Roman history, it’s important to note that when rebellions were crushed, the rebels were often enslaved. Additionally, the emperor in this world channels some serious Caligula-like vibes, adding to the tension and danger. This book is not a cozy romantasy. It’s a fast-paced, action-packed journey filled with political tension, spice, and intrigue. The pacing is quick, making it an easy binge. While some plot points and character arcs are carried into the next book, the romance between Malina and Julian is mostly resolved by the end, leaving room for new characters and stories in the next installment.I can’t wait to see where the next book goes! Based on the way Firebird ends, I have a feeling it’s going to be gut-wrenching, but absolutely worth the wait.Highly recommended for fans of action-packed romance, political intrigue, and dark fantasy!
