"The huge Victorian house on Lake Twilight belongs to Harper Reed Prescott, as does the private island on which it sits. Harper wants little to do with either. Twenty years ago, Harper's grandmother died suspiciously while in her care, on the same night that Harper's boyfriend disappeared. His body was never found, and no charges were filed. But the rumors haven't faded. There have been other deaths, other accidents. All revolving around Harper and her family. Now Harper's marriage is over, her college-age daughter is estranged, and Harper just wants to sell the property and make a fresh start. Except returning to the lake has stirred everything up again. Whispers. Memories. And the persistent feeling that, as she gazes out at the houses across the water, she's being watched in turn. The whole town has always thought Harper has something to hide, and they're right. But she might have even more to fear"--

Packed with twists and turnsβI was sure I had it all figured out, but the story still managed to completely catch me off guard (which I absolutely love). And the bold move of saving all the juiciest reveals for the last 150 pages? Brilliant. I was literally on the edge of my seat, yelling at the book. The lake and the Reed Mansion cast a moody, Gothic atmosphere that deepens the mystery beautifully. As the detectives peel back layers of past deaths, the plot unfolds in all the right ways. Creepy, clever, and so much fun to read.βLife isnβt so bad. Itβs just exactly what you make it.ββοΈβοΈβοΈβοΈ
Ooh, I really enjoyed getting fully immersed in this book! I loved the descriptions of the old manor and quite enjoyed the 1960-1980βs time capsule. I loved the idea of a large house on an island facing little year round cabins. The twists and mystery were great. I felt it was quite a bit longer than needed, and there were many moments where information was repeated. I disliked many of the dialogue moments between Harper and Marcia, but the showdown moment felt a little over the top evil step-mothery for my liking. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys plenty of deaths to solve and a beautiful fictional environment to do it in.Many thanks to NetGalley for the arc!
Enjoyed this book so much. Thought I had figured it out but was completely surprised. Love a book that surprises me.
Harper Reed Prescott owns Lake Twilight as well as.the island it sits on but hasn't wanted anything to do with either. Twenty years ago her grandmother and her boyfriend disappeared. Her grandmother died while she was caring for her and to the cops her death was.suspicious. Even though she was never arrested rumors ran rampant making living on the island hard so she left. Harper is now divorcing and has a daughter who wants nothing to do with her so she wants to make some changes selling the property will help her start anew. What she didn't realize was how much her return would stir up things from the past. Can Harper do want she needs to do so she can get started on a new life or will the past come back to haunt her keeping her from moving forward?
Love Lisa Jackson's stories. But I have to admit, this had me baffled as to who the murderer was. Filled with twists and turns, what a story.
