Wrath is great, but the single POV left me wanting more. 🙃No major heat (yet) but with that cliffhanger, I’m ready for Wrath and Emilia to bring the fire in the next book. 🥵🔥What's not to love? • Princes of He🏒🏒? ✅ • Witchy MFC? ✅ • Spilling guts (literally)? ✅My only gripe? I guessed the murderer early, but it didn’t ruin the fun. 🔍Now, onto the next book in my TBR because, of course, I bought the whole series without reading the first one. 😎
I am light years behind on this series, and I honestly don’t know what took me so long to read it. First off, I love that this takes place in Sicily and that our FMC has such a passion for cooking (side note: you’ll be craving some good Italian food after reading this book 🤌🏼). This was definitely a murder mystery, which was really fun & kept me guessing all the way to the end. I thought the pacing & suspense was perfect, & I flew through the pages because I didn’t want to put this one down. I loved the push & pull between Emilia and Wrath (the banter was top tier👌🏼), and how he was so closed off yet still attentive to her. I have SO many questions after finishing this, & I can’t wait to see how their friendship progresses throughout this series.

I think that a string of witch murders really reigns you in, and then the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins being involved is (in my experience) very unique, and I love the idea of it. I do kind of wish the Seven Deadly Sins played a bigger role than what they traditionally are, but they still filled the role really well. There was a clear plot that was followed really well and written even better. I do wish there were some more action-packed scenes, and more spells, because you know, a witch, but maybe that's something book 2 will give me. The cliffhanger was also pretty insane and made me glad by 2nd book preorder came on time, although the signs pointed to it, for some reason, I just did not read into that foreshadowing, and I am here for it... kinda. (view spoiler) Although it took me quite some time to read, I was definitely in a bit of a slump after finishing the 4th Savage Lands book, and a rough week of work meant it took me longer to finish, but I still think the length was perfect for the story."Love is the most powerful magic. Above all else, remember that."Romance: I wouldn't classify this story as a romance by any means. I think there's some angst, but it's clear there is no resolve or continuation of that, at least in this book. I was hoping for some action between Emilia and Wrath, and there was definitely some banter, but it didn't amount to much. Although there is a lack of romance in this story, it's not taking away from the book because it wasn't meant to be a romance story."One day you'll call me Death. For now, Wrath will do."Characters: I do love me these characters. I think for the most part the Seven Deadly Sin characters are portrayed pretty well, but I do wish there was more action based on their Sin, for some of them. I also love Emilia, I love that she's clearly powerful and strong, but she's not portrayed as this big and powerful, fighter MC that a lot of other books do to their female leads. Her character development in the grief of her sister's passing, and her fight for vengeance, is incredibly written. I wish that we had some more time to find out what Vittoria was like because she gets described as certain things after she passed that we didn't get to read as her personality trait, so it felt like a slight disconnect.World-Building: I think the world-building was good. I was confused in regards to placement at times, but in terms of descriptions, it was really well written. There wasn't a point where I felt overwhelmed, or couldn't imagine a place that was being described."You always have the power of choice, even when those choices seem limited. Never forget that."Overall, this is definitely a great book, but there are a couple of things I feel like we're lacking in order to get it to that 5-star review, but I would reread this book, and likely will when the 3rd book comes out. It's a great Spooktober read, and I am excited to get to the 2nd book. There is a lot of hype behind this book, and don't get me wrong it is a fantastic book that I would definitely recommend to others to read, but in my opinion, there are other books I would hype up more than I would this book.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. I finished it and I'm intrigued enough to want to see what happens in book 2 but I didn't love it. I will see how I feel at the end of the next book.
Kingdom of the Wicked is a traditional Romantasy: It has a strong female lead who encounters a morally grey shadow daddy that shows her a whole new world. The romance is YA but plentiful and top notch. It had enough unique moments and events to keep it interesting. It was a page turner and very fun to read.
Loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns and the constant on the edge of your seat feeling. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I actually loved this book as it started and was totally intrigued, but the transitions weren’t as clean as I would have hoped in the latter chapters. Emilia is a twin witch born into a long line of witches. When Emilia finds her twin’s dead body, it sets her onto a path to discover the murderer. She is thrown into a world where her enemies not only exist, but surround her at every turn. She inadvertently partners with one of the princes of Hell in order to find her sister’s killer, but finds she not prepared for the ways of Hell.I think the story was very interesting - I just ended up with more questions without answers than I had questions with answers. I honestly just needed a few things explained that were not. I’ll have to continue the series to try to get answers!
The narrator did an amazing job with accents and pronunciation of words that I definitely would have read wrong. After about half way through I alternated reading instead of listening. Somewhat of a slow burn but easily captivating. I cannot wait to read the next book.
I read Throne of the Fallen/Secrets before starting this series so I feel like I either confused myself or did not really get the proper “world-opening” experience I should’ve gotten. That being said, I don’t mind. I still prefer the TOF series regardless. The way the Princes of Sin were introduced here was kinda contrary to how I knew them in the TOF series so I had to remind myself that I was getting to know them for the ‘1st time’ through Emilia’s eyes.The plot was intriguing. I was curious to find out who Emilia really was & her role in this world. I wanted to get to know Wrath but I don’t think this series is dual POV like the TOF series.Emilia, in this book, experienced quite a character ‘change’ I guess. From being the bookish/chef kinda person to someone with a lot of vengeance, suspicious & at times, oblivious. But then again, it seems as if she was raised that way & is set to unravel herself as this series continues. So by the end of this book, I was turning pages quickly to find out what happens next!
The plot was super engaging, and I enjoyed it immensely. The lore and the world building were so fun, but Maniscalco truly had me from the start with the mention of a tattooed demon prince and witches.Honorable Mention: the desdescriptions of probably the most decadent Italian food ever. I've been craving shrimp scampi and a canoli for days.
The Kingdom of the Wicked Series had me binge reading with a ferocity! I managed to get through all 3 books in a matter of 6 days and absolutely loved everything about it. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I decided to review series as a set as to not give too much away.The series follows Emilia, a witch, who finds her twin sister brutally murdered on an altar in her hometown of Sicily. Emilia’s search for clues leads her to experimenting with magic she has been warned against by her family her entire life. In her attempt to summon a demon for information, Emilia summons the Prince of Wrath, one of the seven Princes of Hell who she begins to develop a conflicting attraction to. With the help of Wrath, Emilia gets closer to solving her twins murder, but begins to get pulled deeper into the court of the wicked, where there are secrets that may cost Emilia her soul.Emilia’s family owns a restaurant and the author’s connection with food recipes is integrated throughout the series, which I thought was a nice touch. The series takes place in both Sicily and within the seven circles of hell where the princes of Wrath, Pride, Envy, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, and Sloth make up the Kingdom of the Wicked. The world building within the court of the wicked and how each circle represents its assigned sin was one of my favorite parts in reading these books. There was mystery, spice, fantasy, and paranormal elements, all which are big wins for me as a reader. I loved Emilia’s character development and enjoyed seeing how fierce she became with each passing book. She was the sweet, content with a life running a restaurant and discovering new spices for new recipes. I do wish they had more moments together. KoTW brought 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗡 to a whole new level.☾ I enjoyed this book so much there were shocking moments that I did not see coming but kinda got suspicious. I love the suspense that KoTW gave, however, what kept it from getting a 5 star was the writing style in some parts - I thought I had missed something so I would flip to the other page to see - but I didn’t, it just feels like it jumped a little. With that being said, I cannot wait to read 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗱.

Her determination makes her summon a demon of lower level to get some informations. But instead, she summons Wrath, the Prince of House Wrath. One of the seven Wicked.Tied by a spell and by their own interests, Wrath and Emília join forces to discover who's killing the witches and removing their hearts.The story is full of mysteries and conspiracies, what makes us create a lot of theories while reading and makes us not want to put the book down until we discover everything.Of course I loved Wrath!!! 😏❤️Emília's personality made me roll my eyes a few times. Don't know if it's related with her character development.(For a few moments I thought I would end the book an expert in Italian cuisine. Nothing against, but I was more interested in knowing more about the Malvagi and find out who's the killer than in how she cooked pasta with pesto and cannellonis. 😅)Loved the little we get to know about the other princes and their story with the witches.And loved how Kerri developed each Prince around his sin of choiceRecommend. ❤️
I will not lie to you, I devoured this book within 48 hours, but I am out of town without much to do, so do with that information what you will.Let me start by giving a spoiler warning- I won’t be giving up the entire story, but will definitely spoil some good plot twists so if you plan on reading this book- and I recommend this you do- the TLDR is: I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the writing can be a little lacking.I’ll start with the positive- the story is absolutely dripping with the tantalizingly forbidden. From witches dabbling in forbidden magics, to terrifying demons invading the earth, to mysterious and violent murders, to handsome princes from hell- this story by all means has good bones and a sturdy foundation to work with.Now here’s why it didn’t all work for me.The writing feels like it’s shooting for SJM and just falls flat. There’s points where it’s unclear what actions are actually being taken, and what’s being imagined by the main character. There’s points where very important and dramatic events are happening and the writing does not offer the emotion and drama to match- moments that should be tense, frightening, or exciting that are explained with only a few dull sentences. Do not get me wrong- there’s some beautifully written moments, and great imagery, but it is NOT consistent. For instance- when an invisible demon attacks Emilia’s grandmother, the writing does a great job expressing how unexpected the attack is and how Emilia emotionally handles the aftermath in a way that invokes the feelings in the reader perfectly. But then you get Emilia’s two weeks of crippling depression brought on by Lust’s emotion draining magical influence. The entire two weeks are summed up in just a few pages and simply cured by Wrath throwing her into an elemental bath (why it took him this long to help her, I’ll never understand). I would hope the writing would put the reader through that emotionless, motivation-less time as well- forcing us to experience a bit of that alongside Emilia- but it was quickly resolved and moved past.It does not feel like Emilia has to face many consequences- as before mentioned, her falling into Lust’s trap and being influenced by his powers, being childhood friends with a witch hunter, mouthing off to princes of hell, and dabbling in dark magics she once thought to be forbidden… there aren’t really any lasting consequences until the end of the book when she agrees to align herself with (MAJOR SPOILER) the house of pride and sell her soul, and even then that was ultimately her choice to make.When it comes to the characters, it feels like everyone has depth except for Emilia. Now I’m holding out for some character development in her as the series goes on, but for now she feels a bit two dimensional. I will say there is change! She does goes from quiet and safe to vengeful, courageous, and power hungry but there isn’t much build up- she does have the motivation to become this way, but it goes from 0-100 quickly. Emilia went from fearing dark magic to summoning a demon. Normally I’d appreciate some work on the MC’s part that takes her from a weaker witch only interested in peace to a courageous witch with the magic to back it up, but as some others in the reviews have noted, Emilia has no business being as bold as she is. She never seeks out other witches- including her grandmother, and her friend and her friends aunt who practice the dark arts(and both have names starting with C and ending in A which gets confusing and easy to mix up)- to expand her magical prowess. Even Emilia herself admits she knows little when it comes to magical attacks and defenses, especially ones meant to protect her from the powerful demon princes she’s facing, but she does little to fix it.Plot wise, things feel a little too convenient. There are multiple times when Emilia happens to stumble upon the very thing or person she’s seeking out(or events that push the story along.) I get that the horn leads her to it’s matching half- that much makes sense- but she just happens to find things because some disembodied whispers guide her to it a little too often.Don’t get me started on the romance. Wrath and Emilia go from hating each other to passionately making out. I definitely feel the narrator hinting at Wrath having a soft spot for her from pretty early on, but there’s not enough to back up the sudden switch for me. I know there’s a fine line between love and hate, but the line was just a little too fine for my tastes. I feel their friendship developed nicely, but the romance came and went quickly.To wrap things up, I will be reading the second book. It’s probable I will recommend this series. There’s been quite a few books/series recommended to me lately that have been downright unbearable, but this series is one I’ve enjoyed despite my harsh critique. I know I just spent a good while tearing this book apart, but I enjoyed reading it nonetheless. I’m still holding out hope for some character development ...
This was the first book I "read" by this author Kerri Maniscalco and I binged this book. I mainly complete books through audible now as I am able to listen to the books quicker than reading. Audible review at the very end. Definitely consider this book YA and slow slow slow burn but a good one.I really enjoyed the culture the author created through combining Italian heritage, ancestral tales, witchcraft and the demons/princes of hell. I thought it was very well done in staying along the lines of these fictional elements but creating a new scope and little world around it. I really liked the growth of the main character Emilia and her progression throughout the book, and I enjoyed the banter and dialogue between other characters (obviously Wrath in particular). The slow burn progression of the attraction was well done and not like the switch turned on like we usually see which leaves me with whiplash and going back to the progression of loathing to desire. It was well written and definitely left me reeling and wanting more more more of that aspect! I however also loved though at one point of the book she doesn't crumble to pieces at a difficult point and chooses to be strong which she wouldn't normally think of herself prior to the death of her twin.There were also points in the book that stabbed my heart, lifted my spirits, made me laugh out loud - and the pace was well set. This book had many twists and going back and forth to thinking I knew the outcome to being completely surprised at the end and triple checking the release of the next book. all in all, I truly enjoyed this book!Audible Review:This was my first book I've listened to by Marisa Calin. I truly enjoyed her narration, accents, and character voices. She had a great cadence, voice inflection and emphasis on important dialogue. Truly well done!
Ok so im very new to reading books, i usually prefer movies but i can tell you i could not put this book down. The anticipation building to get to the end was intoxicating but the end failed me miserably! Don't get me wrong I would highly recommend this book because I loved the witchy/demonic vibe and the read was easy for someone with English as a second language like me. However i do have some comments about the plot. There were so many unanswered questions and I can't understand how they will be answered in the sequel and why were they not answered in this book. Part of why I couldn't put this book down was the anticipation in finding the truth along with Emilia. Not just for the murder but for her bloodline and the things Wrath hid from her. Instead non of that were discovered and the ending seemed forced along with unnecessary descriptions of food through out the story ( a part I didn't really enjoy since it had nothing to do with the mystery). Another thing that bothered me was why didn't she asked for help..if she didn't want to go to Nonna she could have asked another witch and it sounds pretty reasonable since she had no idea whatsoever of what she was doing. She could at the very least try and improve her knowledge by reading a book or something that could have given her a leverage. I was also very disappointed when Nonna just threw her out of the house unprotected not knowing what she is doing claiming that it was dangerous. One last comment i have is about their "engagement", no elaboration was given on that subject it was just there, not leading anywhere, not discussed by them, no explanation on what that meant or whether or not could it be broken. To sum up i would preferred if there were less of the food and other such distractions from the actual plot and more answers and just a little bit of common sense...like go ask for help maybe then you wont find yourself engaged to a Demon Prince.
4.5 starsI was so excited for this book when it was announced because I loved her Stalking Jack the Ripper series so much and luckily it didn't disappoint. Honestly I had no doubts that I would love this book in the first place. It did take me a lot longer to get through than I thought it would but that was not because of the book it was because I haven't been wanting to read a whole lot lately.This is a great start to a new series? duology? Honestly I don't know how many books she plans to write for this one. This book gave me everything I could want in a book. You get witches, demons, magic, a murder mystery, amazing world building and yes a romance however the romance isn't the main focus of the book but y'all know that's what I latch onto. The romance while not as swoon worthy as Audrey Rose and Thomas' romance was from the very beginning has got me hooked. This is I assume going to be an enemies to lovers type of romance, at least that's what it's shaping up to be and I am here for it. I am actually shocked that I like Wrath so much considering I never like the villains.Emilia was a little too reckless sometimes which was a little annoying but in her quest for vengeance I understand the decisions she made even if they were really bad ones. This also ends on a cliffhanger which isn't my favorite because I am so impatient. The title for the next book has been announced and Kerri said it's shaping up to be her most romance heavy book yet and I can't freaking wait. I will definitely preorder it as soon as possible.
Honestly, I was trying to figure out how I felt about this book the entire time. In the end, I can definitely say I enjoyed it. I will also say I love the SJTR series so I was super excited to read Kerri Maniscalco's new book.19th century Sicily, Italy. Two sisters who couldn't be more different. Emilia is the cautious and not so adventurous twin. Then there is Vittoria who is wild, free, loves to explore what life has to offer. After her sister dies, Emilia is now set on vengeance and gets mixed up with a Prince of Hell, Wrath, and some very dangerous magic. This is a brand new world, new characters but still lots of mystery and murders. It is Kerri Maniscalco after all. This is the type of book that is fast to read. Also those food descriptions. I was salivating and just hungry through the entire book. There was enough going on to keep me on my toes. I for sure couldn't put it down from beginning to end even if had some mixed feeling about certain parts. Demons, Princes of Hell, witches and other creatures, everything from our favorite spooky stories. It was like your favorite supernatural stories come to life whether that may be a good or bad thing is a different issue.It did take me a little time to get onboard with Emilia. Emilia is dealing with grief of losing her sister and processing shocking new revelations that everything in Nonna's stories are actually real. I felt her pain and sorrow and she tries to maneuver her way through new territory. She makes some risky choices and some stupid ones as well. I really believed she should know a bit more though. I felt like most of the info about demons and the history was like a question and answer game. Emilia asks a question to someone and everyone knows way more than she does. I'm like didn't your grandma teach you anything? She did grow on me before the end. I like her determination to avenge her sister, to stop the murders. She is definitely all about protecting her family and other witches so I will give her credit for that but I wasn't always sold on her capability.Wrath. I was expecting to love him right away. I was curious about him but he also took a little time to grow on me. He is a gorgeous Prince of Hell (I'm not complaining.) He is right smack in the middle of everything as well but is way more in the know than Emilia. I think I couldn't figure out what his agenda was. Like some things seemed too easy when Emilia was dealing with him and working with him. I did enjoy the banter between the two but haven't completely fallen in love with the romance just yet. I love seeing different sides of him, the unexpected moments of tenderness and then the more rough around the edges of his personality. I can't wait to see more of him in the next book.The ending does have a cliffhanger and I'm definitely curious to know what is going to happen next. I'm hoping to go to Hell which is not something I say every day. I'm pretty sure there is a lot more to explore in this world. Emilia has set herself on a dangerous path into the unknown and I can't wait to find out what happens next for her and Wrath!
