This book was exactly what I needed after a reading slump. I wasn’t going in expecting a masterpiece and that’s probably why I enjoyed it so much. Had a few issues with modern items taking me out of the book(I’m looking at you tank tops), but it still drew me in enough to keep me entertained and looking forward to the next book in the series.

For a young adult novel this was done wonderfully. Isla is a fierce character that takes on so many challenges that I never thought she would make it out of. The plot twist at the end literally had my jaw on the floor. I never saw it coming.
I had this book recommended to me with a caveat. "It's really fun" or "it's good for a YA book". I'm no stranger to reading YA as an adult, but this book is not just "good for YA", it's good for adults too.The characters are interesting and complex; the story sets up a challenging ultimatum for the characters to struggle with; the world is genuinely strange and yet familiar to fantasy readers.The ending, though, was amazing. Truly clever twists chain together to reveal the mysteries and surprise the reader.It's not the best book ever written, but it's a lot better than you might expect.
I haven’t loved or been obsessed with a book like this in a long time! I am excited to read the next one! The world building and the characters are so well done and thought out. Perfect for fans of ACOTAR and this first book is starting out better than that series did.
