Adelaide Henry carries an enormous steamer trunk with her wherever she goes. It's locked at all times. Because when the trunk opens, people around Adelaide start to disappear.
The year is 1915, and Adelaide is in trouble. Her secret sin killed her parents, forcing her to flee California in a hellfire rush and make her way to Montana as a homesteader. Dragging the trunk with her at every stop, she will become one of the "lone women" taking advantage of the government's offer of free land for those who can tame it--except that Adelaide isn't alone. And the secret she's tried so desperately to lock away might be the only thing that will help her survive the harsh territory.
Crafted by a modern master of magical suspense, Lone Women blends shimmering prose, an unforgettable cast of adventurers who find horror and sisterhood in a brutal landscape, and a portrait of early-twentieth-century America like you've never seen. And at its heart is the gripping story of a woman desperate to bury her past--or redeem it.

Great story set in northcentral Montana. It's about a single black woman who is fleeing a very bad situation. The descriptions of where and how she lived, how various people interacted and treated here are marvelous reading. Totally unexpected situations and scenes and a REALLY totally unexpected ending. Highly recommended.
I am not a horror fan and had to read this book for my college course.I appreciated that the setting in 1915's included a single mother of a trans-child and a lesbian couple. These types of couples would not be mentioned or talked about. The story intrigued me more towards the end, and I loved the ending.
Fast shipping. Great read!
Fantastic mystery/thriller. Straight away you are flung into the action without a second to breath! Every page kept me on my toes! I loved the pacing, which was brisk, but the writing ensured I still got a good feel for the characters' thoughts and emotions. A strong female lead with realistic thoughts and reactions is hard to convey in most stories. They always seem to feel a little forced(in my opinion, but I still love them). In this gripping western, you not only have a strong female lead, but a very colorful cast of other female characters that keep the story interesting. The short of it- This was a surprisingly wonderful read. Was one of my top three reads of 2023. Went in, not expecting much, came out a day later finding I had shut myself in my room, goblin crouched over this book like Gollum and his precious.
I inhaled this on a 6-hour flight. Couldn't put it down for drinks service or a nap.
