ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES "BEST SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY OF 2024" AND "BEST ROMANCE NOVELS OF 2024"
THIS IS A TALE FOR EVERYONE WHO'S EVER FALLEN FOR THE VILLAIN...
This adult epic fantasy debut from Sarah Rees Brennan puts the reader in the villain's shoes, for an adventure that is both "brilliant" (Holly Black) and "supremely satisfying" (Leigh Bardugo). Expect a rogue's gallery of villains including an axe wielding maid, a shining knight with dark moods, a homicidal bodyguard, and a playboy spymaster with a golden heart and a filthy reputation.
When her whole life collapsed, Rae still had books. Dying, she seizes a second chance at living: a magical bargain that lets her enter the world of her favorite fantasy series.
She wakes in a castle on the edge of a hellish chasm, in a kingdom on the brink of war. Home to dangerous monsters, scheming courtiers and her favourite fictional character: the Once and Forever Emperor. He's impossibly alluring, as only fiction can be. And in this fantasy world, she discovers she's not the heroine, but the villainess in the Emperor's tale.
So be it. The wicked are better dressed, with better one-liners, even if they're doomed to bad ends. She assembles the wildly disparate villains of the story under her evil leadership, plotting to change their fate. But as the body count rises and the Emperor's fury increases, it seems Rae and her allies may not survive to see the final page.
★ "Absolutely wonderful."―Kirkus (Starred)
★ "Brennan's adult fantasy debut is two great stories in one: the romantasy in the background and Rae's adventure in the foreground."―Booklist (Starred)

This is my most favorite book this summer (we all know it’s impossible to pick the all time favorites) I have read this book or listened to it on audible approximately ten times this year alone. EVERY TIME I read it I learn something new or realize something I missed. I cried during this book, I threw it across the room, I laughed so hard I might’ve peed myself a little. There’s a twist in there someone smarter than I am (not difficult I know 😭) might figure out but let me tell you I was along for the ride. I picked this book up for the cover and did not see any of the madcap adventures coming. I work in healthcare and the portrayal of the author’s own very real experiences had me sobbing. Both she and her character are badasses. If you want a quick (I didn’t put it down and time wasn’t a thing while reading it so grain of salt) up and down rollercoaster of a riot, read this book. I own it multiple mediums.
Really fun isekai ride with a mix of hilarity and real emotion. Also twisty as all get-out. Can’t wait for the next book!
I really enjoyed this book. I've read it three times now and each time is just as much fun as the time before! I can't wait for the sequel!
There is so much to love about this book! A character with the heart of a hero becomes a villain to save those around her. I couldn't put it down! Beautiful world building, laugh out loud funny, along with being tragic and just steamy enough. I cannot wait for the sequel!
This book hit all the right feelings with characters who are imperfect and deeply complicated beyond the tropes they embody within the secondary world of "the book". It's hilarious, heartbreaking, ugly and beautiful and a great distraction from the ugliness of our world.
