"Easy to understand and simple to implement, Masters of Uncertainty is essential for any person or team that wants to operate even better than they do now."
--Simon Sinek, optimist and New York Times bestselling author of Start With Why and The Infinite Game
Retired Navy SEAL commander and performance expert Rich Diviney reveals a revolutionary method for training individuals and teams to perform at their best, no matter what.
For Navy SEALs, success isn't only a result of relentless training in shooting, skydiving, or combat--though they are experts at those things. The real secret is that they use their innate human capabilities to turn the stress of uncertain and complex situations to their advantage.
In more than two decades of leading, training, and coaching top performers, Rich Diviney (founder of the SEALs' "Mind Gym") discovered that while most elite individuals and teams are masters of preparation, it's how they react when things don't go according to plan that separates the best from the rest. They are Masters of Uncertainty.
With Diviney's science-backed Mastering Uncertainty Method, you and your team will learn how to:
- Turn any uncertain or chaotic moment into an opportunity
- Use your body's natural performance engine to keep going when the going gets tough
- Stay cool and calm in the heat of any moment
- Become a person or team who gets better under pressure
- Gain new insight into your "raw self" (inherent identity and attributes) to figure out the best course of action in any scenario
- Avoid the traps that cause 95% of teams using traditional business and leadership models to consistently underperform
- Cultivate the four domains of trust that are common to all high-performing teams
Masters of Uncertainty is a battle-tested handbook for everyone--working together or alone--to survive and thrive in our increasingly unpredictable world.

This is a powerful follow-up to The Attributes, and in many ways an even sharper and more distilled read. Where the first book laid the groundwork, this one tightens the lens and delivers Rich’s insights with new ideas and insights.Highly recommended for anyone navigating complex environments, leading teams, or simply looking to make better decisions under pressure. This is a masterclass in adaptive performance.

This is the absolutely Awesome Book!!! Very concise, very clear, and very powerful!!! Must Have, for it does work!!!
While the improvement kata is not new, the authors approach of DPO is an easy way to remember and work towards dealing with any situation.
Outstanding book with very useful insights for dealing with stress and in fact, making it work for you. Eating the proverbial elephant one bite at a time and, how to make lessons like surviving the Hell Week surf challenge apply to you.
Very good read. Reading this book will lower your anxiety level by helping build confidence and arm you with the tools to face the future regardless of what it brings.
I did enjoy this. As I get older I realize so many obstacles are in our head so I work on that. This is a perfect book for that.
This book is not another SEAL tell-all. It's far more than that with enormous implications on the readers' lives, should they choose to employ the principles contained therein. Whether it's employing Move Horizons or DPO (duration, pathway, outcome), just applying one or two principles from this concise book could make a dramatic imprint in your life. Rich also discusses a unique and highly effective leadership model employed by SEALs that you won't find common in the business world. We're entering a world where structures of the past are being challenged, disrupted and replaced by more effective and innovative methods. I believe Rich has identified the leadership structure for the next generation. Well worth the read.
I am a senior citizen and this book really resonated with me. It spurred me on to make some difficult decisions that I had made been avoiding.
I predict that Masters of Uncertainty will be my 2025 book of the year. It’s a book for our times; and a phenomenal resource on leadership, decision-making, and adaptability under pressure. Author Rich Diviney delivers a profoundly useful, insightful, actionable guide with a focus on strategies for embracing uncertainty and complex challenges.Diviney manages to synthesize a disparate but nuanced set of concepts into practical lessons. In our unprecedented times and in a world where personal and professional lines blur, Masters of Uncertainty provides a pragmatic approach for dealing with the messy reality of our experience and preparing to handle unforeseen obstacles. The book is segmented into three parts. Part I focuses on the fundamental skills and capabilities required to engage uncertainty. Part II addresses the hidden dimensions that propel us forward and drive action. And Part III integrates the abilities and hidden dimensions into a model required to foster effective teamwork. The insights in this book will help you sharpen your decision-making and develop the resilience to thrive in uncertain situations. If you’re looking to enhance your performance and improve outcomes, I can't recommend Masters of Uncertainty highly enough. I started with the Audible version, quickly bought the Kindle version, and will purchase a hard copy as well—it's that good, seriously.
Incredible book written by a stellar mentor. Rich ties in so many concepts that can help us all in our everyday life, including career, family, and everyday interactions. I have a background in health care and performance so the physiological principles that Rich intertwines into behaviors and Attributes - and that he breaks down into very simple and easy to understand terms -resonates strongly with me- really helps to understand how we react, or are prone to react, in different unpredictable environments / situations, and how to spin our reactions in a positive, productive direction. Truly powerful information. If you agree that "the only constant is change", then you need this book. And if you need any further motivation, read the Sample with forward by Andrew Huberman - it is spot on.
I’ve been a fan of Rich Diviney since The Attributes, and Masters of Uncertainty did not disappoint! If you’re looking for a book that blends personal development with real-world application, this is it.Rich has a way of breaking down complex ideas into something actionable. What I love most is that this book doesn’t just hype up resilience—it gives you the tools to actually develop it. The blend of Navy SEAL insights, neuroscience, and practical exercises makes it incredibly useful. I’ve already started implementing some of the techniques, and I can feel a shift in how I approach challenges. If you liked The Attributes, you’ll love this. And if you’re new to Rich Diviney, this is the perfect introduction to his wisdom. Highly recommend!
What a fantastic book. A resource on leadership and decision making under pressure while handling adaptive challenges that you can use. The book is go to for those looking to develop individuals and teams that can solve ill-structured problems. Highly recommend this book.
Having read and re-read Rich’s first book, *The Attributes*, and gaining tremendous insights, *Masters of Uncertainty* proves to be another invaluable read. Few authors possess Rich’s ability to distill complex concepts into practical, actionable lessons that readers can immediately apply to improve all facets of their lives. As the lines between work and personal life blur more than ever, challenges like uncertainty, indecision, task overload, and even brain fog are increasingly common. This book provides a powerful framework to navigate these obstacles, helping you sharpen your decision-making, enhance adaptability, and ultimately become a better version of yourself. This book is for everyone, a must-read. It's just that good.
