I loved this book!!! I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next one to come out. I lost myself in the fantasy world and couldn’t get out. Some characters that I thought I was going to hate….ended up loving! Highly recommend!
Legendborn had me hooked.Bloodmarked had me craving more.Oathbound had me annoyed and hoping for a conclusion with the fourth book that makes up for how clunky this offering was.So why the vast change of heart? Oathbound to me felt like a book written entirely by a different author, which I recently found out Deonn had a cowriter in Olivie Blake which totally makes sense now and it shows.The constant POV and timeline changes weren't necessary and made it very confusing and occasionally hard to follow. As the kids today would say, you're doing too much, bruh! It came off as repetitive as well and honestly a good portion of this book could have been cut out and it would have worked all the same, if not better. For as long as this book was, it felt rushed if that makes any sense.I both listened to the audiobook and read along simultaneously for the most part and while I thought I was going to like the different voice actors doing different parts/chapters, it fell flat for me and was just not that great. One of the other females, not Joniece Abbott-Pratt who is the main narrator, is rough when she's attempting to do Lark and his Scottish accent. He sounded almost Swedish when she spoke as him.Also some of the narrators pronounced the Welsh words in the way that they should be, and others pronounced them as if they were just phonetically reading them on the page. It was a little bit annoying that the continuity didn't match up.The last quarter of the book where it's mostly focused back on Bree is where things flipped back around and felt like Tracy Deonn was "driving the bus" again. That portion felt familiar to me and felt like what I fell in love with about the first two books, especially the twist at the end.With that all being said, if the first book had been written as clunky as this one I probably wouldn't have continued the series. I'm hoping that she takes her time and puts in the same thoughtfulness with the final installment that she did with the first two books to give us an ending we truly deserve and doesn't without the help of a coauthor.
Intrigue, magick, love,loss and twists and turns. A great third book in the Legendborn Cycle. Now I have to wait for book 4 to eventually come!!
Ummm, ok, I really did struggle with this one. I landed on a 4 star because while I enjoyed the first 2 books, this one made me roll my eyes the most. This book was unnecessarily long. Also, I didn't know Bree could be even more annoying, but it was possible.I have to say this trilogy was so unexpected, in such a good way. The premise, the history, fantasy, and love on so many levels is right up my alley. I especially loved reading about a girl that looks like me. I wish I had these books in high school. However. I did have a hard time reading book 3.1. Bree (Insert long sigh here). I can give her grace because she's a teen, but the level of recklessness was too much in book 3. I rolled my eyes way too much. She was like a bull in a China shop! I also understand the events took place over a 6 month period, give or take. She had been through a lot. I lost my mom when I was 27 and I couldn't imagine having my life turned up side down by dark creatures, magic, and an ancient secret society. Yet, it was so painful to read her being ridiculous for no reason. I guess my 39 year old mind couldn't take it lol!2. The long plot. Wtf! The book did not need to be 645, or whatever pages! Why? Way too much filler! I can't stand when authors feel the need to do this. You have a great story and you're a brilliant writer, you don't need to spend pages describing how attractive someone is, over and over again!3. This follows from # 2. Why did you have to constantly spend time talking about Nick and Bree hooking up? Or how attractive Nick is? Also, they're teens, and yet, they're talking like adults when it comes to sex. Look, I'm not a prude. I was a teen once and I remember being hormonal, heck, I still am lol! But, it was ridiculous here. I found myself skipping over soooo much when they were at Penumbria, because it became dumb. I get that she was rediscovering him, but dang! Not everything is about looks and attraction, even as a teen. It got to the point where it made no sense to include it. It also made me not care. I enjoyed their connection at the beginning, but this made me forget why they got together in the first place.4. Again, I skipped forward. This felt like watching a movie and getting so annoyed, that I fast forward certain parts to: not waste time and to stay focused.5. The ending. Ummm, what was that? Lol! If you removed the filler, you could've had more story and not just ended it there. Super fizzled out.Finally, even with all my frustration, I still loved the series. Book 3 isn't my fav., but I'm so happy I discovered it. Tracy is a great writer. I felt the culture and could relate to the history. It was wonderful to read a story where a black girl could be strong and vulnerable, while also being surrounded by so much love and protection.
