Harvest year-round from your bountiful and sustainable fruit and vegetable garden.

Huw Richards’ ultimate guide to permaculture gardening, outlining the regenerative methods that make gardening easier to do while being more productive. Huw shows you how to expand your growing beyond annual staples like tomatoes and cabbage to perennial fruits and vegetables, berry bushes, and fruit trees.

By mixing your planting, gardening with the seasons, and optimizing your garden design, you will create a more beautiful and more sustainable garden that is better for the soil, local wildlife, and your crops – without costing more of your time.

The book includes:

  • What to grow: a substantial and comprehensive reference of all the edible plants and flowers you can grow – when to sow, grow, and harvest.
  • Includes perennials that produce every year, maximizing yield for effort as well as introducing new plants to your garden.
  • A permaculture approach: streamline the way your garden operates with ideas on building resilience (for example, how to store water), using vertical space, generating healthy soil, and mixed “polyculture” planting.
  • Aesthetics and environment: how to make your kitchen garden look good year-round by planting ornamental edibles and flowering crops that attract pollinators.
  • Maximizing space: a chapter on spaces helps you grow in shade or a south-facing corner and use pots and climbing varieties up walls and fences to bolster beds and under-cover growing areas.
  • A roadmap for the year ahead guides you through the key moments throughout the four seasons.

Huw Richards' Books Have Led Us to Success!

Huw Richards' YouTube channel is a favorite in our home, so we were thrilled to hear he was releasing another book. As experienced gardeners, in a completely different (desert) climate, we’ve still had great success following his advice. That’s a testament to the clarity and practicality of his methods. This book is not only full of useful guidance—it’s also beautifully designed. The photos make it worthy of any coffee table, and the step-by-step illustrations make each project easy to follow and replicate.Thank you, Huw!

Great information

Great book. Haven’t been able to put it down. Highly recommend for every gardener, new to master. Well written. It is written for Great Britain so you might have to adjust some of the veggies and fruits to more common varieties in your zone. I won’t apply every suggestion but plan on implementing at least some of the suggestions. I follow the author on UTube and enjoy his channel.

Bom livro

A beautiful book that you will actually use.

Huw made a great decision when chose to partner with DK Books. Huw's lifelong experience in gardening and his honest, gentle way of communicating is combined with lots and lots of beautiful pictures. The quality of the paper and the binding, the graphics and the easy to read layout make this an exceptional book, the kind you can pass down to the next generation.Permaculture makes so much sense as this way of growing food follows the patterns in nature. Huw Richards offers instruction on how to adopt this method but also the reason why it's beneficial to your garden and the planet to do it this way.

Really excellent book with lots of techniques for growing food in a more natural layout

I love this author, and this book is my favorite so far. It's beautifully written and illustrated, and the photos are gorgeous. It feels like you can step right into his garden and start harvesting beans or something.I've been a gardener for a long time, and have been trying to set up a more natural layout to ease the insect pressure, especially the cucumber beetles. By mixing up where plants go instead of planting them together in blocks, I've seen fewer pests this year than last year. I don't have the perfect setup yet, but the advice in this book is really great for understanding and experimenting with permaculture, and growing more fresh food in a smaller space. I'm looking forward to how the garden does this year, and anticipate smaller grocery bills this summer.

I ordered this book as I like the author Huw's YouTube channel. In addition to practical knowledge, I like to read small nice things to know such as grape tree lives 100 years, author's point view to pests etc. I look forward to applying what I learned from the book to my new garden.

Excellent gardening book

The Permaculture Garden is so much more than an informative book about all the functions of gardening in a productive, sustainable way. It is presented beautifully! Huw is an excellent writer who organizes the content so it is easy to follow. His illustrations are lovely and the photography is stunning. I'm applying the principles from the book to gardening in Colorado. I highly recommend pairing this book with The Self-Sufficiency Garden, also by Huw Richards with Sam Cooper adding a great cooking chapter.

A Must for the Garden Book Shelf

Full disclosure, I am a big fan of Huw. I have all his books.First off, I would say American gardeners have a lot to learn from their British cousins. No dig, no peat, multisowing & starting almost all veggies in module trays are just a few take aways from the Brits.Huw has some great down to earth strategies to make your garden more productive and more earth-friendly! I will reference this book along with Huw’s other books often.I do have one recommendation- some of the perennial plants listed in the book are considered invasive in some US states (Cinnamon Vine is one plant that is invasive in quite a few states). Do a quick search of the plant/seeds you want to grow before pressing that “Buy Now” button!

This book is spectacular, I think my favourite of Huw’s books so far! There is so much detail, information and tips on permaculture and many other aspects of growing your own food, lots of which I’ve never come across before, and I can’t wait to try incorporating some of these ideas and practices into my own garden.Huw’s writing style is very readable and the layouts/ design of his books make them my favourite gardening books (and I have over 60!).The info in this book allows even an inexperienced person to learn by explaining many of the basics of permaculture and general growing, before then going into greater detail and depth about perennial growing, garden design, and so much more.Perhaps one of the most exciting/ unusual sections of this book is the ‘Perennials’ which includes info and growing advice on around 90 perennial fruit, flowers and vegetables, many of which I’ve not heard of such as Nine Star Brocolli and Musk Mallow, or common plants which I didn’t know were edible like Grapevine and White Mulberry leaves. As Huw says in the book, ‘Who said you can’t eat trees?’I would recommend this book to anyone interested in growing food or even just gardening as you’ll learn so many incredible principles, techniques and ideas that can be applied to any garden no matter the size. The book is also just a joy to read and Huw did many of the drawings and diagrams (which are amazing) that help illustrate his writing through another medium as well as the countless stunning photos spread throughout the book.
