New York Times Bestseller
Winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction
World Fantasy Awards Finalist

From the New York Times bestselling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an intoxicating, hypnotic new novel set in a dreamlike alternative reality.

Piranesi's house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.

There is one other person in the house-a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.

For readers of Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane and fans of Madeline Miller's Circe, Piranesi introduces an astonishing new world, an infinite labyrinth, full of startling images and surreal beauty, haunted by the tides and the clouds.

Well Worth The Read

The book is well worth a read. The Character feels real and we journey and discover through him. I dont know how to explain it, it is not a book where i want to know more about the world, or visit again. However, I am glad that I read it and now that its over i have a bit of a somber feeling, which may be the point.***MILD SPOILERS***I believe my feeling is that— just like the character— finding out is house isnt REAL ( except in a plato perfect forms way) I feel how the character must feel. So in that sense this book is phenomenal in that at each stage of “ awakening” i felt exactly as the character did but i also dont like this feeling and wanted more of the wonder that the character originally held.

A Discovery of Statues, Tides, and the Perdon Within

Susanna’s books are like exploring a place you once thought familiar, but when you turn a corner to experience that wonderful Deja vu, you are excitedly surprised by experiencing something new and wonderful! Sure, there are dark doorways, hinting at malevolence or evil, but they hold merely the strange, and the inevitable delight of her thoughts and style.I treasure reading Susanna’s work as I am allowed moments of true escape, hope, fear, and relief.Thank you Susanna Clarke. You are one of a handful who let me truly disappear into another place.

A masterpiece.

I've read thousands of books, and this is one of my most adored books of all time. The world building and setting is immaculate and the plot absolutely enraptures you. I read it in a single sitting and have re-read it multiple times since. The premise is so unique and a bit difficult to explain with words, but if you're a fan of weird fantasy & liminal spaces like me, I beg you to please read this book and experience it for yourself.
