Bringing his cosmic perspective to civilization on Earth, Neil deGrasse Tyson shines new light on the crucial fault lines of our time--war, politics, religion, truth, beauty, gender, and race--in a way that stimulates a deeper sense of unity for us all.
In a time when our political and cultural views feel more polarized than ever, Tyson provides a much-needed antidote to so much of what divides us, while making a passionate case for the twin chariots of enlightenment--a cosmic perspective and the rationality of science.
After thinking deeply about how science sees the world and about Earth as a planet, the human brain has the capacity to reset and recalibrates life's priorities, shaping the actions we might take in response. No outlook on culture, society, or civilization remains untouched.
With crystalline prose,Β Starry Messenger walks us through the scientific palette that sees and paints the world differently. From insights on resolving global conflict to reminders of how precious it is to be alive, Tyson reveals, with warmth and eloquence, an array of brilliant and beautiful truths that apply to us all, informed and enlightened by knowledge of our place in the universe.

Another great hit from NGT! I first learned of this book watching one of the many Star Talk podcast. I've always been interested in the cosmos and love taking in all that I can but I have always shied away from books on the topic as I have feared they would be to technical and unenjoyable. This book is just the opposite. NGT gives us a cosmic perspective on our civilization and details just how trivial all of our problems on planet Earth are when compared to the universe. He gives some hard truths on all topics but does well at giving evidence on both sides of the issues. If you are dead set on any of your personal beliefs either political or religious then you may find some of the topics discussed a little uncomfortable. However that is the whole point of this book. Giving a cosmic perspective to our society. If you go in with an open mind you may actually take a few things away after reading this book.
Neil deGrasse Tyson has a rare gift: he combines a deeply scientific mind with humor, humility, and an awareness of social issues. I have always appreciated the way he communicates complex ideas with clarity and warmth. This book is a great example of that. The book explores the universe through a cosmic lens, reminding us how small our problems are and how much more alike we are than different. It is thought-provoking without being heavy, inspiring without being preachy. I truly enjoyed it and came away feeling both smarter and more connected to the world.
It wasn't as good as I was expecting. I had a high bar considering whose book it is. It was a bit rambling at times.
Neil deGrasse Tysonβs Starry Messenger offers a witty, thought-provoking look at humanity through a cosmic lens. Its essays on science, society, and truth are engaging and accessible, though some topics feel too broadly addressed. A great read for fans of popular science seeking perspective on our place in the universe.
I am already a fan of the author so reading his words and perspective was tremendously enjoyable. I wanted to use a highlighter to mark so many significant passages. I'll probably read it again in a couple of years.
