"Raw, real, and gripping." --Colleen Hoover

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Before We Were Strangers, a warm and witty novel about a struggling writer who must come to grips with her past, present, and future after she discovers that she's the inspiration for a pseudonymously published bestselling novel.

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J. Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn't thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That's because the novel is patterned on Emiline's own dark and desperate childhood, which means that "J. Colby" must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn't seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront "J. Colby," but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

Lacked chemistry

This book had a very unique plot, going between the past in a fictional book and the present real life was cool. That being said, I didn’t get a lot of chemistry between the FMC and MMC. They hadn’t seen each other in 12 years and there was just no chemistry, at all. I do like a friends to lovers trope, and I liked her father’s arc. But I just never felt like they were in love, more like trauma bonded….

Another good one by Renée!

Another classic love story where it is about timing and fate. Books like this make me feel there is some star crossed lovers left in this world after all!

another great book by Renee Carlino

This is my second book read by this author and I’ve loved both of them. This is a second chance romance that will give you all the feels. I loved reading the “book” part of the story. It was different than any other second chance romance where they’re just remembering back in time. It was clever and the whole book overall was so well written. I loved it! Em & Jase 💕

It was okay

This book draaaaggggeeeedddd on. It could have ended a hundred pages sooner without missing much except for her bawling about everything. The story was cute, but I was bored to death through the majority of it.

Beautifully Written

5/5 ⭐️Truly amazing story with dark elements about reconnection and second Chances. This is the second book I have read from this author and she brought me to tears again!
