Talking at Night

Did I practically DNF this and just skim the pages once I got to about page 100? Yes. I wasn’t invested in the characters or their building. The lack of quotation marks isn’t my thing. There wasn’t enough development of the characters for me to really love them and feel for them. Is it because of other factors within the book? I don’t know.This is the first book I’ve read like this. It was decent but after all the rave reviews I had high hopes for it and they just fell short.

A slow beautiful burn of a story. Melancholic and moving. A great example of how our own ideas about ourselves keep us from loving and living. And how other’s ideas of us keep us from our own personhood.

the book is just….. sad.it’s beautifully written, and the plot’s okay i guess but these characters are frustrating. a sad love story between a sad man and a sad woman. it’s especially frustrating with rosie, i have a hard time liking her.it started really well, getting frustrating in the middle, a little more hopeful towards the end. beautiful writings is the only thing that kept me going.

The first 100 pages are utter bliss and comfort, but the very moment the first part ends, it feels as though you are attempting to run through quick sand as character after character pass away or participate in abysmal decision making. It truly pained me to read this book. However, the author's writing can only be described as outstanding and captivating. My advice to any new reader of this book is this: bask in the first 100 pages, and attempt to cling on to an infinitesimal amount of pleasure in the artistry of the writing to complete it.
