From the winner of the Edgar Award and the Samuel Johnson Prize, a cultural history of "everyday madness"
The Book of Phobias and Manias is a thrilling compendium of 99 obsessions that have shaped us all, the rare and the familiar, from ablutophobia (a horror of washing) to syllogomania (a compulsion to hoard) to zoophobia (a fear of animals).
Phobias and manias are deeply personal experiences, and among the most common anxiety disorders of our time, but they are also clues to our shared past. The award-winning author Kate Summerscale uses rich and riveting case studies to trace the origins of our obsessions, unearthing a history of human strangeness, from the middle ages to the present day, and a wealth of explanations for some of our most powerful aversions and desires.

I bought this used for £7 and I really don't think that it should be worth more than £4 let alone £20+ for brand new!I had a print out from the inrernet that had way more phobias enlisted than this book. Good for 8 year old geeky kids like Sheldon.
I'm OK with this book, and I'm going to read it even though I don't like reading used books. A sticker on the backside said "Used --- Very Good", whereas I had expressly ordered a new copy. Since the book is in very good condition indeed, I will keep and read it all the same. But I'm not at all happy with the fact that an important detail of my order was simply ignored.
This book is very interesting but please be aware that some of the phenomenons and other things in the book maybe a bit long to read but if you've got time on your hands and want to learn some more information about people's frightening things like being afraid of clowns spiders and other things even including x wives and mother-in-laws
The book deserves 5 stars, shame about the condition it arrived I'm due to zero care being taken in packaging. As you can see in the photos the item looks used or damaged. Having bought this edition because I liked the cover better it's a shame it arrived like this (if you sell something as new then it's dishonest to send out damaged products at the same price. If the copy is damaged sell it as descirbed with light wear and tear at less). It's not a gift so I won't return it,but a little care goes a long way. The book in itself is wonderful like all of Summerscale's book.
Great fun 🤩 and learning tool. Don’t become paranoid as You think 🤔 of it you’ll find it
