#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - A white-knuckle legal thriller that begins in a weedy lot on the outskirts of Memphis, when two boys watch a shiny Lincoln pull up to the curb. . . .
"The desire to find out what happens next keeps the reader turning the pages. Grisham is an absolute master of the chase story."--The Washington Post
Eleven-year-old Mark Sway and his younger brother were sharing a forbidden cigarette when a chance encounter with a suicidal lawyer left Mark knowing a bloody and explosive secret: the whereabouts of the most sought-after dead body in America.
Now Mark is caught between a legal system gone mad and a mob killer desperate to cover up his crime. And his only ally is a woman named Reggie Love, who has been a lawyer for all of four years.
Prosecutors are willing to break all the rules to make Mark talk. The mob will stop at nothing to keep him quiet. And Reggie will do anything to protect her client--even take a last, desperate gamble that could win Mark his freedom . . . or cost them both their lives.

A well composed story, told well. My own practice was centered around federal tort cases, so I hesitate to comment much on the merits of this tale except to say it is an enjoyable read. I was never in any cases in criminal courts at the state level, but did see action in theft of trade secrets in Federal Court with Federal juries, so I was intrigued about the FBI's witness protection program. Not unlike the character in the book, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable under it either. Every day I'd be looking over my shoulder every time there came another knock on the door. The Mafia has a long memory, I'm sure. In the1980's they rubbed out a squealer at the stroke of midnight less than a block from my house. Very bloody and very scary, indeed!! Ten empty shell casings were found at the scene, so it must have been some kind of machine gun to do that. Bugsy Seigel was his name, a well known mafiosa.
Great book and enjoyed listening to it.
Simply one of if not the best Author. Highly recommend this book. Riveting and very creative. Not my first time reading, but I hung on every word.
I loved almost evefything in this book. The characters, especially the heroes (who are very brave indeed). Also the southern atmosphere, some law issues... and especially the end. For once Gridham is not entirely against the system!
Hard book to put down if you can relate to a poor 11 year old child, who is scared, seen too much, and watched too much TV. The child's inner dialog and antics keep a bad situation entertaining.
