The Goodreads Choice Award 2024 runner up, The Family Experiment is a dark and twisted speculative thriller set in the same universe as John Marrs's bestselling novel The One and The Marriage Act, about the ultimate "tamagotchi"--a virtual baby.
Some families are virtually perfect...
The world's population is soaring, creating overcrowded cities and an economic crisis. And in the UK, the breaking point has arrived. A growing number of people can no longer afford to start families, let alone raise them.
But for those desperate to experience parenthood, there is an alternative. For a monthly subscription fee, clients can create a virtual child from scratch who they can access via the metaverse and a VR headset. To launch this new initiative, the company behind Virtual Children has created a reality TV show called The Substitute. It will follow ten couples as they raise a virtual child from birth to the age of eighteen but in a condensed nine-month time period. The prize: the right to keep their virtual child, or risk it all for the chance of a real baby...

The way John Marrs' mind works is fascinating. I feel his books can actually become our reality one day. The story had me experiencing so many emotions. I felt invested in the characters then to find out they were not who they appeared to be. I have read several of his books that have similar surprises. The twists and turns made me dizzy but I couldn't stop reading.
Neat set up for a book, read when you have time to fully focus on the difference between the characters it can get slightly confusing, nice twist
The ability of this man to captivate Me with peoples complex feelings, situations and mix them with dystopian craziness never fails to amaze me. We aren't far from this, folks. Mars knows. Lol.
This one got my brain turning its futuristic cogs. Brilliantly written, fast paced, and will definitely get you thinking, "what would I do?"
So good!! This was my first Sci-fi thriller and I must say I am super impressed! I love how he plays up AI and some chapters made me think that some of this could happen in real life 🤣 highly recommend!!
