"This story is my latest obsession." --USA Today bestselling author, Devney Perry
The gods love to play with us mere mortals. And every hundred years, we let them...
I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus.
Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won't notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus' patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god.
The worst god. Hades.
For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible--the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus. But instead of fighting their own battles, the gods name mortals to compete in their stead.
So why in the Underworld did Hades choose me--a sarcastic nobody with a curse on her shoulders--as his champion? And why does my heart trip every time he says I'm his?
I don't know if I'm a pawn, bait, or something else entirely to this dangerously tempting god. How can I, when he has more secrets than stars in the sky?
Because Hades is playing by his own rules...and Death will win at any cost.

Did you read the Hunger Games, or watch the movies? What about 50 Shades? How did you feel about them? Most of us know those two series, even those who didn't read or watch them still know a good amount of the plots. So, while you think of those two series, I want you to add in one more: Percy Jackson. While I'll admit that part of the reason I say Percy Jackson and not another monster hunter is the whole Greek gods thing, you'll find it's not even close to the only reason if you do decide to read this book.I'm very serious about the book having similarities with these other series, but it's also an amazing journey that teaches you the value of love and the importance of friendship. It is a wild ride with a lot of laughs, a ton of... mishaps, I guess is a good word, and many bumps along the way.So, you may not find exactly what you expect from this book, but you will find laughter, tears, and, I almost forgot, moan worthy moments.Enjoy...
This story follows Lyra, a thief, who was cursed by Zeus to never be loved and she is thrust into the crucible as Hades tribute. The crucible is an annual deadly competition that the gods hold to prevent war amount themselves and to determine who will be king of the gods for the next year. This book is hunger games meets Greek gods with more romance and I DEVOURED it! I was entertained from start to finish. The book is fast paced but it never felt rushed. And Hades, Omg. Another thing I loved about this book was that it’s a different Hades romance. Most are from Persephone’s POV, so the different take was refreshing.THE GAMES THOUGH! they are so creative and thrilling! Abigail Owen came up with some really cool concepts for them. I’ve never wanted to take notes about a book before but I wanted to for this book! I wrote down each god’s tribute and their different details and qualities. I also made notes of what abilities and boons they won. It made the story a little easier to follow and made it more impactful to me. I have never wanted to write things down for a book before if that tells you how invested I was.I didn’t want to put this book down and already want to read it again. If you loved the Hunger Games as a teenager, YOU NEED TO READ THIS!
This book was phenomenal. Action, drama, romantasy. All the things. I cannot wait for book 2! This is a must read!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! Was it a literary masterpiece? No. But was it wildly entertaining and a joy to read? Absolutely! I loved the trials and games. They were quite imaginative and helped to show the growth in the FMC. Loved the back and forth banter between the MMC and the FMC. It made the character incredibly likeable. I love me some snark. And I loved the spice. The side characters were interesting and added depth to the story. All in all, it was a grrat read and a fun time, and I would definitely recommend it.I can't wait till the next one comes out.
From beginning to end this story is just amazing. Each character is so unique and well developed that you can almost forget it’s just a fantasy story. Beautiful! A must read.
