Never before has the daughter of a great magician written with such candor and beauty about magic's backstage-and onstage-world, where even the most outlandish dreams are possible.

The Magician's Daughter-A Memoir is a coming-of-age story set within the motion and light of a traveling magic show. Fourteen-year-old Katy is the daughter of Lee Grabel, a former professional magician stuck behind a desk in the suburbs who yearns to rekindle the past fame of his old magic show. When he decides to hit the road again in a grand bid to be a Las Vegas headliner, Katy has her chance for the spotlight she yearns for as his stage assistant. With a truck full of wonderments, the Grabel family and their crew go on tour across the western states, where trouble quickly ensues along with the increasing unhappiness of her mother -The Beautiful Helene-who is disenchanted with the magic show even as she runs it with military precision from her table stage right. Setting up, performing, and packing out of town after town, tensions mount, and betrayal is in the air.

Through error and misstep, Katy struggles to free herself from the show's intoxicating spotlight. Meanwhile, the Grabels and their crew are getting closer to their booking at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where the show's ultimate fate will be determined.

Readers will be captivated by this page-turner where Penn & Teller meets Mission Impossible. It's a tale that delves into the complexities of family dynamics and the enduring power of love, set against the backdrop of a mesmerizing magic show

This was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone, whether they want to know anything about Magic tricks or what it's like to be on the road traveling to a different city every few days.

A lovely story of nostalgia and the innocence of youth

Well written memoir, from the perspective of a young woman chasing her own dreams, while supporting her father in his dreams. The author's style is a mixture of nostalgia, humor, and the innocence of a young woman. She brings a great deal of honesty and vulnerability to her recollections from the past. Definitely worth the read!

A Heartfelt Memoir of Love, Family, Dreams, Magic, and Moments that Change Life.

Katy Grabel does her own magic with pen and paper in this eloquently written honest and raw memoir. She masterfully captures life on the road with her father, a magician, passionate for the admiration and applause that only performing on a stage can provide. Driven to succeed whether in business or as Lee Grabel the Magician, his steadfast determination, focus, and desire to achieve is something to admire. Luckily, he had his beautiful and graceful wife, Helene, and daughter, Katy, as his steadfast and trustworthy stage assistants. It's through this journey of the traveling magic show that young Katy observes and learns some of life's most important lessons, especially those about herself. This memoir is written from journals she kept while on the road. Little did she know that one day those journals would be the guide for such a beautiful, insightful, and sometimes painful story, dreams and lessons learned and lost, told only as the daughter of Lee Grabel could do.

An excellent story, well told

A delightful surprise! Beautifully written, with discipline, thought, and complete focus on the story the author is telling, with care and respect for her subjects and readers. It was a pleasure spending time with these people, most especially Helen/Helene, the true star of the show and the tale.
