"A uniquely charming mixture of whimsy and the macabre that completely won me over. If you ever wished for an adult romance that felt like Howl's Moving Castle, THIS IS THAT BOOK." --Helen Hoang, author of The Kiss Quotient

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. It's an unforgiving job, and Hart's got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness.

Mercy never has a moment to herself. She's been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest.

After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to "A Friend". Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born.

If only Hart knew he's been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most--Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares--each other?

Set in a world full of magic and demigods, donuts and small-town drama, this enchantingly quirky, utterly unique fantasy is perfect for readers ofΒ The House in the Cerulean Sea and The Invisible Library.

"Truly outstanding romantic fantasy." --India Holton

"An unabashedly offbeat adventure." --Freya Marske

"I cried twice and smiled plenty."Β --Olivia Atwater

"A little sweet, a little spicy, a little sharp and entirely moreish!"Β --Davinia Evans

"I showed up for the fantastic, fun fantasy setting but it was Hart and Mercy that kept me reading." --Ruby Dixon

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This whole series is whimsical, wonderful and well written. If you’re looking for a cozy romantasy novel that also somehow also feels high stakes and plot-driven, this is IT. The characters have depth and nuance and will leave you wanting to read more as soon as you finish. I can’t wait to see what Megan Bannen writes next!

Read it.

I adored this book and I did not expect to. The world-building here is very fun, and the characters were engaging. Sometimes the inner monologues were a bit repetitive, but not so much that it takes you out of the story. I did not expect such a unique and fleshed out world. Must read.

Cozy fantasy rom-com!

This was a wonderfully cozy read that also happens to be fast paced and pretty action packed. Enemies to lovers, unknowing pen pals, and a happily ever after. It’s exactly what I am looking for in a book! The spice was the perfect level but it was plot driven as well. I can’t wait to read the second book!

Amazing!

Probably my new favorite read of the year. I don’t know why it took me so long to read this book… Don’t sleep on it! Devoured this book in two sittings. I love Merci and Hart so much <3

a little of everything

A mix of romance, world building, gods, family dynamics, mystery and tears. Good writing, non-typical characters and plot development and it is easy to read. Overall I’d say it is 4.5 out of 5, but I rounded up to 5 :)
