NATIONAL BESTSELLER - The New York Times bestselling author of The Invited will shock you with a simmering psychological thriller about ghostly secrets, dark choices, and the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters. - "One of the year's most chilling novels." --The Miami Herald
West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter.
Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that has weighty consequences when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished. In her search for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked into the historical mystery, she discovers that she's not the only person looking for someone that they've lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

Had been given the book title as a suggestion. I use the Libby app so I'm limited to the 21 days you get for library books. I read at night and often fall asleep. I knew I missed some important pages during the first read through, that I have renewed the book 3 times. I have read it twice and it was hard the first time. The 2nd time reading was much easier. well worth the time to fully understand.
Loved it!!!!
The author did a great job of making you want to keep reading. By the end of the book I couldn't put it down! When I finished it? Hugely disappointed. Several questions went unanswered....What happened to Sara? Was it Gary? If so, what happened when Katherine opened the door? Just wish it didn't end the way it did.
As someone who has been a voracious reader for more than 7 decades my reading passion has included books about hardcore sciences, strange esoteric type books, ghost and paranormal books and well-written westerns. This is why while browsing on Amazon when I came across this book (Winter People by Jennifer McMahon) I decided to purchase it.I found this book to be a fascinating combination of mystery thriller book and even somewhat spooky novel that keeps you turning the pages. I never give away too much information when reviewing any novel, but if you are a fan of this author’s other books you may want to check out this one.Rating: 5 Stars.
Great read. I loved this page turner! This isn’t something I would have normally read, but it was a book club choice. I’m very happy to have been introduced into something new.
