In the novel The Cay, a young white boy and an old black man are stranded on a small sandy cay in the Caribbean Sea following a shipwreck. Eleven-year-old Phillip was blinded by flying debris when a torpedo struck the SS Hato, and old Timothy has taught him how to survive. This prequel-sequel tells the rest of their tale in alternating chapters--the compelling story of two very different people who share the courage and tenacity to turn their dreams into reality.

Inspiring Story

I have read and re-read this story many times. This man sacrifices hugely to ensure the survival of this boy and the boy learns SO much about opening his heart to differences through the man. This is a beautiful story, and the "prequel" called Timothy of the Cay is also a beautiful story.

Good series but....

I enjoyed both books in the series. The first one best. I do wish he had ended the second in a different way with more detail after he and his father made it back to the Cay and also had him reunited with Stew cat.

Great book

I came across this book while substitute teaching in a Junior High reading class. I am always looking for good books for our grandsons and ordered this one for our 11 year old. He likes to read adventure stories about the outdoors. It is full of life lessons and survival skills, as well as friendship and trust and the importance of a never give up attitude. He used this book for a library class assignment and did very well!

Sometimes It’s Great To Read A YA Book

Enjoyed this book as well as the first book, The Cay. Some call it a YA book but I say not!
