"The first thrilling mystery in the new North Falls series from Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Girls and the Will Trent Series. Welcome to North Falls-a small town where everyone knows everyone. Or so they think. Until the night of the fireworks. When two teenage girls vanish, and the town ignites. For Officer Emmy Clifton, it's personal. She turned away when her best friend's daughter needed help-and now she must bring her home. But as Emmy combs through the puzzle the girls left behind, she realizes she never really knew them. Nobody did. Every teenage girl has secrets. But who would kill for them? And what else is the town hiding?"-- Provided by publisher.

I did not find this as good as KS’s other series, Will Trent or Grant County. I found the first part of the book quite poorly written and not at all gripping; it contained far too much seriously superfluous detail and its pace was somehow slow. . As it was KS I did persevere and indeed the pace picked up and the plot took its many turns. I did work out one of the main perpetrators fairly quickly but not all the family complexities. In my opinion, KS’s work tends to be very plot driven and I think this often masks the less than fluent writing. It is very didactic rather than letting the writing reveal character and I sometimes feel that I am being told how to view one of her protagonists instead of developing my own opinion. Having said that, the plots are usually good enough to grab and retain interest; I just wish this had got off the ground sooner. Had I not read KS’s other series, I doubt I would have got past the first section.

Karin Slaughter writes with an insight and pace that is rare and this book is no exception. I won’t spoil the plot for you by giving a synopsis-you can read the publishers blurb on your own. I guarantee you will not be disappointed in your choice to read this book. I know I’m a bit biased because KS is my favourite author since I read Blindsighted over 20 years ago. I didn’t think I could love any of her books more than her Grant County series, but then came Will Trent and now the Clifton’s. I really hope this becomes a series.

Karin at her best!25 books in 25 years and they never disappoint!I have not been able to get this book out of my head! Which has dimmed and overshadowed anything else that I’m reading at the moment. With its rich characters, twists and turns, and that ending?! Totally didn’t see that coming!I’m already looking forward to what Karin is going to release next.
