The Mummy meets Death on the Nile in What the River Knows, Isabel Ibañez's lush, immersive historical fantasy set in Egypt and filled with adventure, a rivals-to-lovers romance, and a dangerous race.
Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that's been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns the most: her globetrotting parents--who frequently leave her behind.
When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an archeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and a golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there's more to her parent's disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.
With her guardian's infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parent's disappearance--or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.
What the River Knows is the first book in the thrilling Secrets of the Nile duology.

That epilogue though!!! I’m so glad I have the next book downloaded and ready to go. This was a blast. Telenovela set in Egypt. The twists kept on twisting!
I wanted to love this story for what it could have been…..but it was a huge struggle to make it to the end. The first book was better than the second, but both of them fell so short of the potential this story had.Inez is the most naive, annoying, and pathetic character I have ever read. It was so obvious who the villain was in Where the Library Hides. And Inez turned her nose away from so many things that were right in front of her. She would have deserved everything that would have happened to her if other characters didn’t keep stepping in to stop it.I will say a couple of twists were thrown in throughout the books that I wouldn’t see coming, and that made me want to push through to see how everything played out. But I had to skim through chapter after chapter after chapter because the plot was slow and the dialogue is so repetitive. I wouldn’t recommend these books.
This book was as twisty as the Nile! One minute I thought I knew what was going on but nope. The next minute I thought I knew who Inez could trust. Nope! I have admittedly always been a lover of Egypt and this book is absolutely delightful because of it. A little tedious at times but that’s probably due to my modern sensibilities clashing with 1800’s misogyny. Nothing aggravates me more than a woman being brushed off, seen as stupid, seen as a tool, seen as a cash cow, etc, just because she was born a woman. It drives me nuts. I had to put the book down when something was taken from her by a pretentious man. The whole time she was kept in the dark about everything and that was not fair to her at all and was just so frustrating. Now I have to get the sequel to find out what is going on because it ended on one heck of a cliffhanger.
So yes FL upset me a few times with the choices but she's young and I knew that going in. I kept reading. Giving it a chance. I had questions I needed answered. The author chose to answer none of them and left me in an angry cliffhanger that now I have to read book 2
I will be recommending this book! I loved how the scenery was so detailed you felt that you where there! The ending 🥹😳 definitely reading the second book!
