Stunningly romantic, Lauren Blackwood's heartstopping Ethiopian inspired Jane Eyre retelling, Within These Wicked Walls, ushers in an exciting and unforgettable fantasy voice.
What the heart desires, the house destroys...
Andromeda is a debtera--an exorcist hired to cleanse households of the Evil Eye. She would be hired, that is, if her mentor hadn't thrown her out before she could earn her license. Now her only hope of steady work is to find a Patron--a rich, well-connected individual who will vouch for her abilities.
When a handsome young heir named Magnus Rochester reaches out to hire her, she takes the job without question. Never mind that he's rude and demanding and eccentric, that the contract comes with a number of outlandish rules... and that almost a dozen debtera had quit before her. If Andromeda wants to earn a living, she has no choice.
But she quickly realizes this is a job like no other, with horrifying manifestations at every turn, and that Magnus is hiding far more than she has been trained for. Death is the most likely outcome if she stays, the reason every debtera before her quit. But leaving Magnus to live out his curse alone isn't an option because--heaven help her--she's fallen for him.
"[A] can't miss debut." - Harper's Bazaar
"Stunning... An inventive, original, and legitimately scary debut, this is a must for fans of witchcraft, horror, and romance." - Nerdist

I put this on my reading list because it was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick and I like fantasy novels. The story was kind of a parallel to Jane Eyre, but the Rochester character, Magnus, was very inconsistent. The other characters were well developed, but there were inconsistencies in the plot.
If you are looking for a great book that you won’t want to put down, you have found it! This book was full of suspense and innocent romance. You feel like you are able to relate to the characters and want to keep reading to see where they are going to take you. Definitely a must read!
This book was adorable. Kind of like a dark 'cozy' fantasy. The pacing was a bit off for me and some minor grammar flaws that are personal irks but did not detract from the storyline. Cute and quick read and will absolutely read this author again!
I enjoyed this interesting send up to Jane Eyre with a very young vulnerable Mr Rochester. Ms Blackwood has created a stunningly realized world where dark magic reigns. Mr Rochester’s house needs cleansing and staff are disappearing….who is he going to call? Andromeda….unlicensed but knowledgeable….
Firstly, DNF. This book is poorly written from the beginning. I found myself wanting to edit or re-write basic sentences, and was baffled by the lack of adequate background information, character development, and suspense. But, Andi’s supposedly arduous trek to the castle should have told me this story could only go downhill if the editor allowed this to pass for a gripping start. I’d expect this level of “storytelling” from some self-pub, unedited romances, not a major publishing house.
