Are you doing what you can at work and home, but you still drop the ball, disappoint others, and never have time for yourself?

We live in a world that makes us believe that anything is possible. You can be a top performer at work, a patient parent, a supportive friend, a frequent gym visitor, and an eager community volunteer. We can have it all, right?

The reality is that we can't. There are only so many hours in one day, and our energy is limited. Solving this puzzle by calculating how much time or energy you can spend in each role is unsuccessful. Soon enough, you realize you need more days in the week or duplicate yourself.

In Work-Life Strategy, Lieke ten Brummelhuis, a Professor of Management, takes a different perspective. Human beings have three psychological needs: to feel in control, competent, and connected. These needs are key ingredients for people to feel happy. Work-Life Strategy explains how you can strategically use your life roles to fulfill the three needs and find happiness.

Work-Life strategy is an excellent choice for those who want to be present in two roles equally (working parents) and those who prioritize one role over others (career investors, stay-at-home parents). Through hands-on exercises, the book helps you design your own work-life strategy to navigate your complex life successfully.

Essential reading!

This book is a must read for anyone who may be struggling to balance multiple life roles, navigating significant life transitions, or simply seeking greater happiness across various roles. I found it incredibly helpful in breaking down role satisfaction into core components, which facilitated a better understanding of what truly matters. There are many practical strategies for how to weigh priorities, compensate across different roles, expand existing roles, or address unmet needs.I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of real-life examples of individuals at different stages of life. Seeing how they manage their unique circumstances and balance their roles was relatable and inspirational. The activity sheets were a standout feature for me. They helped translate the concepts into actionable steps and gave structure to developing a personalized work-life strategy. Rather than passively reading, I felt actively engaged in managing my life more intentionally. Overall, a practical and insightful resource for anyone looking to build their work life strategy!

Often when we’re struggling in life, we sense something’s wrong but can’t quite explain it or figure out where to begin. This book helps with that. It gives you the language to understand what you’re experiencing, a framework to diagnose what’s going on, and practical tools to start making changes. What I appreciate most is that it doesn’t claim there’s only one right answer. Instead, it offers guidance and room to experiment, helping you make sense of your unique situation. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just off track, this book helps you name it, face it, and start moving forward.

I found this book to be a breath of fresh air in the crowded space of productivity and self-improvment books. Rather than offering unrealistics promises, this book delivers a grounded, research-backed approach.I also found the exercises to be a useful tool. They’re not just reflective, but actionable, which could help to craft a customized strategy to help anyone fit their unique circumstances. The tone is empathetic and realistic, acknowledging the limitations of time and energy while empowering readers to make meaningful choices.I will absolutely be recommending this to family, friends and collegues.
