Written 75 years ago, 1984 was George Orwell’s chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever...
This 75th Anniversary Edition includes:
• A New Introduction by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, author of Take My Hand, winner of the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work—Fiction
• A New Afterword by Sandra Newman, author of Julia: A Retelling of George Orwell’s 1984
“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching...
A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

I get this was cheap, but it was nearly impossible to ready because of its build. The pages are so narrow, the words get partially sucked into the spine because there is almost no margin.I had to jam the two sides of the book down as hard as I could on a flat surface to get it to open enough to read the words in the spine. This also meant you had to use two hands the whole time you were reading, which was also not ideal. Super annoying, but again, I guess you get what you pay for.
Exactly what we needed for class. Required reading is not enjoyable reading. lol
This is my second time around with this title...read it decades ago the first time. It's still a great book. Every single person on the planet should read it.
I wasn’t expecting an impact so heavy. This book is truly profound. In ways that you cannot prepare for. The treachery of total control. Of absolute planning. Breaking of human spirit. Destruction of past present and future. It’s a horrid thing to consider and even more-so in the present day with our knowledge of those groups that attempted to create such a nation state in the past.It should be required reading, perhaps not in high schools where the mind is too young to really grasp what is being said (except perhaps with a great instructor) but in literary courses in university. Democracy is at risk without knowledge of what the total absence of it looks like. The era of WW2 is starting to become seemingly ancient and so that risk of it disappearing forever from our minds is real. All I can say is, those who read it will find themselves captivated by what is potentially possible. It’s a world unlike anything you have probably explored, especially in full
Amazing book. So relevant it could have been written last week.
