“A brilliant novel.… [A] savage satire on the distortions of the single and collective minds.”―New York Times
In Anthony Burgess's influential nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, a teen who talks in a fantastically inventive slang that evocatively renders his and his friends' intense reaction against their society. Dazzling and transgressive, A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil and the meaning of human freedom. This edition includes the controversial last chapter not published in the first edition, and Burgess's introduction, "A Clockwork Orange Resucked."

It's a good thing I have this movie because the slang makes it almost impossible to read. I'm only one chapter in and considering DNFing it based solely on the slang. If I had never seen the movie, I would have no clue what's happening. I'll keep trying to read it as people say it gets easier to understand, but definitely kind of disappointed. I was excited to read this. 3 stars because I know how the story goes and I do enjoy the movie.
I guess that I am gonna be the odd man out with my low review of this novel. The violence didn't bother me. I loved the film. But the book is FILLED with this futuristic street slang. It's in almost every sentence. Makes it difficult to understand what is being said and what is happening. If I hadn't seen the film, I would have been completely at a loss as to what was going on in most of the scenes of the book. It's a perfect example of how NOT to write a book. If it hadn't been made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick, would this book still be considered a classic? Probably not. The story is a good idea, maybe even a great idea. But the execution of that story is very poorly done. The futuristic street slang makes it a difficult read, very difficult.
If you get past the first five chapters, you will be hooked. I heard of this book in my youth, but didn’t read it until age 75.I may try to find the movie adaptation to seal the deal
When I received my package I knew right away something was gonna be damaged but luckily it wasn’t too bad other than some of the books having dirt and glue? on them and some scuffs here and there.
A Clockwork Orange is… violent. It is lewd. It is appalling. Degenerative. And ultra-violent. Written in a slang English-Russian. This has been one of the best books I have ever read. In the beginning you have Alex. Who is a degenerate. A sexual predator. Violent thug. Thief. But throughout the story and especially in Chapter 21 you see…growth. Real growth. From a 15 year old kid who wouldn’t bat an eyelash and even enjoy a little ultra-violence to someone who is slightly more mature and grown. It’s worth every page and every sentence. A man who cannot choose for himself, ceases to be a man at all. Anthony Burgess wrote something really good here, and while I realize it may not be for everyone. I think everyone needs to read it.
