A grown up Little Red Riding Hood meets werewolves and witches in an adult fantasy romance.
To enter the woods as a human means death... But I am no mere human. They call me, "witch."
As one of the last surviving witches, Faelyn's sole duty is to keep the protective barriers on the forests where the lykin roam-creatures who can shed flesh for fur-sparing nearby humans from their violent, beastly natures. When she has an unlikely encounter with the rare, primordial spirit of the moon, Faelyn finds herself not only the object of the Wolf King's desire, but essential to his ability to keep his crown.
Taken to the magical land of Midscape, the Wolf King claims her as his bride to control the moon spirit's magic that now resides within Faelyn. But Faelyn refuses to resign herself and the spirit Aurora to a life of servitude underneath the king's cruel rule. Faelyn hatches a dangerous plan for them both to escape and help comes from an unlikely ally.
Evander is the king's blisteringly handsome, loyal knight, right hand, and Faelyn's sworn protector...on the outside. But appearances are not what they seem. He plots against the king's brutality at every turn and helping Faelyn escape will serve these ends. But altruism for Faelyn and the trapped moon spirit isn't his only motivation... Evander is hiding secrets, and they might change Faelyn's life forever.
A desperate plot to escape. A brutal king. Ancient powers. And a sworn protector who can't keep his hands off her... Will she be taken as the Wolf King's bride? Or will she manage an escape that will free her heart and change her fate forever?

Honestly, I have loved every book in this series and this one is no exception. Kova has a way of balancing intricate plot with heartfelt romance to keep any romantasy reader fully hooked from beginning to end. I love that each book in this series is a standalone but still do tie together in their own way. Highly recommend!
I loved the other Elise's other titles and I was so excited about this one; she did not disappoint!! Faelyn's life has been peppered with loss, but after her most recent she makes a trek to a ritual site where she comes across a female who is more than she appears. Evander is a Wolf Knight who has been sent to retrieve this mysterious woman. More and more misfortune befalls Faelyn, but she takes it all in stride and with Evander's help they all might make it out alive. I truly enjoy both Faelyn and Evander as a couple and the way they have approached both the good and bad in their lives. Also, hats off for making me yell at Faelyn out loud about Conri's deception literally right before the further plot reveal!!
I tried.. I tried to give it 2.5, but I couldn't do that. There's a term writers use called 'nasal gazing,' and if there were a concrete definition for that term, this writing style would be it. I'm not sure if this is the author's first book or near to it, and maybe she just doesn't know the dos and don'ts, or what. I always want to give the benefit that maybe it's just inexperience, so let's say it's that. I think people who don't write, and have no idea about the ins and outs of writing a novel, could enjoy this. Hooray for getting books published.
I'm not sure if this is an earlier book from Elise but it was no where near the same standard as her IceQueen series. And ofcourse way too much sex distracting from the story. I stopped about a third into the book. If you are into that stuff then I suppose you should read it. π
I thought this book was great! It may not be everyones cup of tea, but I enjoyed it. It's not the typical werewolf romance books which honestly was refreshing (but I certainly still like the usual werewolf romance books lol). I was excited to get to know more about the lykin that I had read about in the previous books and the lore was definitely interesting. I wish we had gotten a bit more on it, but still ended up with enough information for the world building and history on them. The mfc is a bit... Naive and made some decisions that I personally disliked however I believe that was the point. She's young and innocent and has never really ventured out past grandmas cabin in the woods. She had very little real world experiences even in the natural world besides the death of her mother and then her grandmother. She basically lived in this protective bubble and still had trauma. So yeah, that's probably going to make a person naive and make bad decisions.Evander, as far as mmc go, was good in my opinion. Wasn't my absolute favorite but was good for this book. I like how it went into his past and that he had been the boy that Faelyn was in love with in her past all along. Everything in his past explains why he is the way he is. He was very smart, calculating and a good fighter.I'm a little disappointed in the ending only because I thought there would be a bit more of the other books coming together into this one. There was some, but not as much as I was hoping because I felt like there was quite a bit of foreshadowing in the other books and the bonuses about the books all coming together but hopefully Elise Kova will write another book bringing them all together. I was initially very disappointed in the ending with how the lykin didn't want to change, didn't like Evander and how Evander couldn't manage to rule them. But as I've thought about it, it makes sense. The lykin are, for a lack of a better term, animals. Savages if you will. For the longest time they lived a certain way involving violence, hate and brute force and that's all they know. Evander is not built that way because of his time in the natural world with humans so of course he feels like he's not equipped to handle ruling over them. It's not really his job to make sure they figure it out either. They treated him, Faelyn and Aurora atrociously so in my opinion, they owe the lykin nothing. If they don't like someone else coming in to just genuinely help them, then they can figure it out on their own.I however appreciated Aurora's character and her ending. I personally loved Aurora and what she added to the story. I cried a little during the scene where she "dies". She was one of my favorite characters in this book honestly. She was wise, calm and kind even when some didn't deserve kindness. Her story is very sad but has a happy ending. One more thing I'd like to add is that I appreciate that Elise Kova made these characters alright with adoption in the future. There's not a lot of heterosexual romance books out there (this being the first one I've seen) where the main characters don't end up getting pregnant and having their children that way. So I appreciate the representation of people who can't or decide not to have children the "traditional way". I also like that she didn't make Evander magically fertile again. Basically what's done is done and they can have kids other ways. She very easily could've made it to where they magically found a way to fix it but she didn't and that's awesome to me. She also didn't write Faelyn to be upset about it or make it to where the characters are so insistent on getting pregnant that they go off trying to find a way to "fix it". Anyways, overall I just really appreciated that aspect and appreciate the representation.
