Read the series that inspired Three Pines on Prime Video.
From the #1 New York Times bestseller Louise Penny comes the second Armand Gamache mystery set in the stunning countryside of Quebec.
Winner of the 2007 Agatha Award for Best Novel!
Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder.
No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter―and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death.
When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he's dealing with someone quite extraordinary. CC de Poitiers was electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake, in front of the entire village, as she watched the annual curling tournament. And yet no one saw anything. Who could have been insane enough to try such a macabre method of murder―or brilliant enough to succeed?
With his trademark compassion and courage, Gamache digs beneath the idyllic surface of village life to find the dangerous secrets long buried there. For a Quebec winter is not only staggeringly beautiful but deadly, and the people of Three Pines know better than to reveal too much of themselves. But other dangers are becoming clear to Gamache. As a bitter wind blows into the village, something even more chilling is coming for Gamache himself.

Best book I ever read. Three Pines is great place to live.
Good product
To rate this book with only 5 stars was not enough. Its been years since I read this book the first time but it has had so much more meaning this time around and explains a lot that I have forgotten over the years. Its really the start of who Gamache really is deep down inside; his beliefs, his actions and how he reacts to the pressures in his life as the chief inspector, husband and father. Louise Penny put a lot of thought into the characters she created. Gamache and his family plus all the people who live in Three Pines are well developed. The power of a "good" book depends on how fleshed out your characters are and if the plot holds your attention to the end of the story. Louise Penny has done just that and so much more which makes her one of my favorite authors. I'm hoping to reread all the books in the series before The Black Wolf is released in October 2025. Her books are powerful and need time to digest what you have read and sometimes rereading the chapter over a second time to make sure you haven't missed something. Louise Penny's books are to be savored. A Fatal Grace is only the second book in the series but lays down the foundation of her storyline in the books to come. I provide no spoilers. It's up to the reader to draw their own conclusions.
The second book in the series makes the characters even more like family that you really look forward to spending time with.
The writing is wonferful. My only criticism is the author can be a little rough on marginal populations such as the elderly and the overweight. That's why I took one star awzy.
