The mega-bestseller with more than 2 million readers - A New York Times "Readers' Choice: Best Books of the 21st Century" Pick
From the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Lincoln Highway and Table for Two, a beautifully transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

I grew to love this book. I was unknowingly pulled into the Counts life with his wit, graciousness and amazing dialogue. I am a Towels fan for sure.
My absolute favorite book, ever. Heard Mr. Towles speak when he was on tour (to a packed crowd) and it was a treat. There might have been a film made - seemed to remember an ad for one streaming on Paramount. The ad made the hero out to be a fool and an idiot. Never watched it - would love to see a better film version.
Great read - just enough novelization mixed with just enough historical connections to satisfy the history nerds out there
This is one of the best historical fictions I have ever read. What a great story. What’s fantastic character development. You are really invested in the protagonist. And what an amazing ending. This book reads like a literary classic masterpiece.
My first read from this author, I've now started another, The Lincoln Highway and will read all of his books. He is without a doubt one of the best writers in today's book world. This book was recommended to me by an accomplished published writer who proclaimed this author as one of the best he's ever read, and the one making the recommendation is one heck of an author himself, James Howard Kuntsler.
