An instant Indie and #1 New York Times bestseller!
"Achingly atmospheric and beautifully sharp, A Study in Drowning will draw you in from the first page." --Rory Power, New York Times bestselling author of Wilder Girls
Bestselling author Ava Reid makes her YA debut in this dark academic fantasy perfect for fans of Melissa Albert and Elana K. Arnold.
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she's had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad--Emrys Myrddin's epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him--is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin's family announces a contest to redesign the late author's estate, Effy feels certain it's her destiny.
But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming. Including Preston HΓ©loury, a stodgy young literature scholar determined to expose Myrddin as a fraud. As the two rivals piece together clues about Myrddin's legacy, dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspire against them--and the truth may bring them both to ruin.
Part historical fantasy, part rivals-to-lovers romance, part Gothic mystery, and all haunting, dreamlike atmosphere, Ava Reid's powerful YA debut will lure in readers who loved The Atlas Six, House of Salt and Sorrows, or Girl, Serpent, Thorn.

Stunning book, even better story
Loved this book!
"She didn't know what Effy was escaping from... She didn't know what it was like to drown."Ava Reid's beautiful writing about what it feels like when you're drowning - and in over your head - had me questioning if what the character was thinking was real or if it was imagined. The character questions this often thoughout the book, appearing fragile and broken.I enjoyed reading about a young woman who finds herself in a world made for men. She has to learn to stand up and fight for herself, much like the character in the novel she has read a hundred times. The themes are somber, heavy, and weigh her down, often causing Effy to run and hide in fear. Her thoughts spiral, as she tries to decipher if the strange things she keeps experiencing are really happening, and she needs to find a way to escape from them. The weather, the water, and the sky are perfect symbols for what Effy is feeling on the inside. As she discovers more about herself throughout the book, and the author she admired so much growing up, the weather changes. It becomes foreboding and dangerous. A clue to the treachery and lies that have been carefully crafted around one sad and haunting story.
A beautifully written fairy tale, devoured it in 2 days. It could be a standalone, but I'm really looking forward to the second book coming out!!
Read this book in just over a day, I couldnβt put it down. I loved the characters and all the descriptions, cannot wait to read the next book!
