#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - John Grisham's first novel is a searing courtroom drama that probes the savage depths of racial violence and introduced the world to fearless lawyer Jake Brigance.
"John Grisham may well be the best American storyteller writing today."--The Philadelphia Inquirer
The life of a ten-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless white men. The mostly white town of Clanton in Ford County, Mississippi, reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime--until the girl's father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own hands.
For ten days, as burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spread through the streets of Clanton, the nation sits spellbound as defense attorney Jake Brigance struggles to save his client's life--and then his own.

But 2 stars is good. Gosh even back then justice in the USA was corrupt. And there was as too much waffling in the writing. I guess the writer got better at stripping out the dross as his career moved on. I’ll look out for some more.
The movie is good, BUT this book is great. Yes I recommend this book.
That rings too true of our history in the South. As expected, plenty of action and riveting characters. It’s a book that once you start the read, is so difficult to put it down to get back to work & life.Thank you John Grisham for another great read. I am never disappointed.
It went from one plot twist to another. Haven’t seen this movie since 1996. Now I’m excited to watch it again to compare. I didn’t know there were other Jack Brigance novels. I plan to read those too.
This was the first book I've have read by John Grisham and it really kept you on the edge of your seat if you like good books I really recommend this one!
