The classic boyhood adventure tale, updated with a new introduction by noted Mark Twain scholar R. Kent Rasmussen. Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read

A consummate prankster with a quick wit, Tom Sawyer dreams of a bigger fate than simply being a "rich boy." Yet through the novel's humorous escapades--from the famous episode of the whitewashed fence to the trial of Injun Joe--Mark Twain explores the deeper themes of the adult world, one of dishonesty and superstition, murder and revenge, starvation and slavery.

There’s some of Tom Sawyer in all of us!

Mr. Twain does it again brilliantly in the telling of Tom Sawyer. A story to be told and read thru generations to come. Personally, this story really moving for me. So much, that I took my family to Hannibal, Missouri to see the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) aka “Tom Sawyer.” The town in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is modeled after the real Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up. As he traveled and moved his heart always remained behind, creating the stories of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Learning about Mark Twain and his upbringing you can see that the Adventures of Tom Sawyer would never have came to exist without this town and this story with all the characters, such as Becky Thatcher, Huck Finn, being based on real people. Reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer we can all see there is a little of Tom Sawyer in all of us, even as adults remembering out youth. This is a book that speaks to the true meaning of youth, and being young and playful, as this book speaks to both the young and the old readers of today.

Seen It’s Day - Offensive!

I revisited this novel, many many years after reading it as a child-required reading in elementary school. Well, you might’ve heard there’s been quite a movement to try to have it removed from schools due to its racist content, and I completely agree. Deeply offensive, it takes place in Mississippi about 20 years before slavery was federally abolished. You’re not going to get more racist than that.. The “N” word and a slur used for Native Americans, as well as a slur for people of mixed racial ancestry are common place in this book, along with deeply offensive racial stereotyping for both Black people well as Native Americans, and both girls and women are portrayed in misogynistic stereotypes too, for good measure. All in all, I think that this book would be best used as part of a class for understanding the racism and misogyny we are trying to grow past as a culture, and what it was really like here in the United States at one point. But for a kids reading class? Absolutely not.The story itself I found incredibly tedious and a bit snarky... not my fare. I had to force myself to read it to the end.
