Definitely, I'm part of this community! Inspired me to move in directions I was so afraid of. Thank you all
Reading this book reminded me of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books my parents got me when I was little. I realized after reading that I had been expecting it to be a bit disappointingly full of 'girl power!!' fluff. The advice is genuinely helpful, specific, real world stuff. I don't know if I can really count myself in the cool girls club because my only firing so far happened from a dumb job I had as a teen but I am definitely keeping this book to use as my handbook in case that day comes, or if I decide to bring that day upon myself. It also made me wish I was friends with Laura and Kristina! Fun, buoyant, helpful voices. I bet this book sticks around.
This book flips the script on failure with humor, grit, and grace. Laura and Kristina remind us that getting fired can be the beginning of something far greater—a reinvention story waiting to happen. Every woman should read this!
I'm glad this book exists; it came out when I needed it. But let's be clear: it is written by privileged people for privileged people. The authors' advice is often based on circumstances that the average person in the US may not be able to relate to, like "if you're looking to make money during your job search teach a class on what you're skilled at” or “wait for the right job” (not direct quotes). This book is obviously geared toward people working at the tops of their fields who can afford not to work for months. The stories from various successful women are fun but the majority of them basically say "I got fired and it turned out to be a great thing because then I started my own business and enjoy my life so much more now." So for people who don't currently have a way of getting capital to start their own businesses, good luck. That said, the book is cathartic to read but can also be a bit triggering for those of us looking for jobs who don't necessarily have the resources these people do. It also has some good bits on using LinkedIn and how to address the uncomfortable subject with your network and friends.
As an entrepreneur, the only person who can fire me is me. But this book is an important read for anyone who hires and fires within a company. You're very much reminded of the need for humanity around the process. And if you're an employee of any sort, it's also a must-read, just so you're prepared, pre, during, post. It's easy to think it could never happen to you, but ATCGGF is a reminder that it happens to almost everyone at some point in their career. The Oprah and Lisa Kudrow interviews were surprisingly moving. You would think these women had moved on from their firings given all their success, but it's still clearly visceral for them.
