Lydia lives in Acapulco. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while cracks are beginning to show in Acapulco because of the cartels, Lydia’s life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. But after her husband’s tell-all profile of the newest drug lord is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.
Forced to flee, Lydia and Luca find themselves joining the countless people trying to reach the United States. Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

American Dirt is an emotional and intense story that follows Lydia and her son as they flee cartel violence in Mexico and make the dangerous journey to the U.S. It’s a powerful tale of survival, motherhood, and the fight for freedom. The narration adds real emotion and urgency to their journey, making the audiobook hard to pause. A heartbreaking but hopeful listen that gives a human face to a difficult topic.
Awesome book!
This book shows the inhumane way we as US citizens treat women and children coming to our country through our borders and what they have to endure.
This book is so well written, you felt as if you were traveling on La Beastia along with Lydia. What a horrendous journey migrants choose to make in order to escape their present reality. It’s inconceivable to me that the current administration continues to propagate false claims blaming these people for all of our problems.
I can not remember when I have ever been so emotionally attached to a story. Everyone with one ounce of humanity in their heart needs to read this tragic and timely reflection of the issues many face. It's not about "building a wall" to keep people out of the United States of America. The human side of the issue is much more complicated. I recommend this life changing story to everyone.
