"After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on most measures. Why? In [this book], social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the 'play-based childhood' began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the 'phone-based childhood' in the early 2010s"--

Lets take our children back!

JH has effectively described the hijacking of our children by the internet and all its platforms. Smartphones have hypnotized and made our children addicted to their devices. As a grandmother, I am so scared of the future that will have further consequences on our kids. But JH tells us how all of these effects can be changed! We ( parents, teachers, family members, community leaders, politicians', spiritual leaders, etc.) Can change it. Schools have started to set new policies.Thank you to JH for his experience and knowledge of this very serious epidemic and the suggestions made!I ask that parents read this book and save your children!

Worth the investment and the read!

Every person who loves a young person should read this book. It has an abundance of supporting information that tells many of us what we already know - access to smart phones and social media have devastating effects on our youth (adults too but some of us are too far gone). I agree with the author in that it is a more responsible thing to do in keeping our children, especially under the age of 16, away from access to smartphones. We’re dumbing down our youth while creating a generation of socially isolated and depressed kids. 😢

Eye-opening book

Incredibly eye-opening book. This is a must read for all parents no matter their age. We, as a society, has become too dependent on screens and our children are suffering as a result. So important for everyone to read this.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK!

The content is eye-opening. The author makes an undeniable case regarding the dangers of children and teens with smartphone usage, screen time, social media, and more.Parent, grandparent, teacher, mentor - if you care about kids AT ALL, I urge you to read this book. Then, take action! Use your influence to protect the youth in your circles. Social Media and the obsession with the device are absolutely killing our families, our culture, and our future.

Very informative

Never read this book! If you do, you'll start to be more aware of your child's technology use, and you will start suggesting crazy things like hanging out with friends or going outside. Jokes aside this was was a very informative book backed by data and research into how smartphones and social media affect young people. It's really eye opening to hope we have changed adolescent development with simple little devices.
