1977. NASA launches the space probe Voyager 1. One of its missions: answer the question--is there intelligent life beyond our planet?
Fast-forward a thousand years. Question answered ... by the Psychlos, a ruthless race of aliens have traced the probe back to our planet. In a single sweeping alien invasion, the Psychlos have scorched the Earth, all but wiped out the human race and stripped the planet of its natural resources.
Now, in the year 3000, humankind faces total extinction. But in this post-apocalyptic world, as a new millennium arises, so too has the courageous Jonnie Goodboy Tyler. In classic men's adventure fashion, Jonnie manages to raise an army out of the remnants of humanity, knowing that against the seemingly invincible aliens, the uprising will require a daring strike on an epic scale.
Is it the end of our world ... or the dawn of a new one? Will the human race be an instrument of the planet's destruction ... or the seed of its rebirth?

Great book. The production quality of the audio is outstanding.
OK, I actually liked the movie despite the horrible visual effects and lame presentation - I watched it imagining it with better special effects and enjoyed it anyway. The movie only covered the first fourth of the book, ending before most of the philosophical stuff, and the multiple species of snooty alien stuff, and the plot thickened several times stuff.Jonnie pulled some pretty impossible stunts, but that was something to be expected in books written in this vein. Hero sagas, especially heros who don't think they are heroes. Oddly enough, real life heros don't think they are heros either, and often pull off some pretty insane stuff. I don't think this is purely a hard science fiction book, but also a action hero book, and a philosophical treatise. Also, a hero who invested time and energy into reading and learning was delightful, and his use of childhood skills to internalize new techniques was realistic enough.Instead of making this a movie, they should have made a four or five part miniseries.Anyway, it was obviously written to appeal to a young male audience, while hiding an extremely mature philosophical message that would be missed by most young males, (Greedy leaders leads to a majority of individuals being unhappy, but while leaving people to their own devices can often lead to greedy people trying to take over). Checks and balances are important. So, having watched the movie, I was thoroughly enjoying my book, got to where Terl blew up, and expected to find that I was at or near the end only to discover I wasn't even halfway through the book! The remainder was just as good as the beginning.Only a 4 out of 5 because even though it was well written, the female characters were totally ignored for the most part, so were underutilized. On the other hand, kudos for emphasis on almost every human culture, and including the negative traits of humanity along with the positive.
If you have seen the movie, FORGET EVERYTHING YOU SAW! This book was written in an amazing style and definitely will capture your attention if you are any kind of science-fiction fan. After reading it, you will see what I mean. I ordered this one because my previous copy was lost in a move at some point. Currently I am into my 3rd or 4th read of it and still greatly enjoy every minute. (I would also recommend "Mission Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard. That one is more a commentary on our human nature, but is an amazing ride) Hope you enjoy it!
This review is just for the third party book company that I bought the book from on Amazon. Prompt delv and the book was in exactly the shape they said. Very pleased!
Amazing author, but seems to stay in the same part of the story for ages. I would guess that it could have been half as long. I love the movie - which most don't - but I don't think I'll be able to finish this.
