When a local fisherman is mauled to death, it seems like the only possible cause is a mythical creature in the latest puzzling entry in this USA Today bestselling series.
An ice fisherman is savagely mauled to death in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and an eyewitness claims the man was attacked by a hodag. There's just one problem with that: it's well known that the creature is not real and was created by a local hoaxer. So how could an imaginary creature be chomping on local sportsmen?
The suggestion that a hodag killed someone isn't well received by the townsfolk because of its beloved ties to the town and the money it generates from tourist dollars. Due to this, people begin to suspect the witness is the real killer, especially when it's discovered he has a tangled past with the victim.
The witness to the attack happens to be the nephew of Morgan Carter's bookstore employee, Rita Bosworth, who convinces the professional cryptozoologist to travel to Wisconsin to prove that a hodag not only exists but killed the victim.
Clues may be hard to come by, but one thing's for sure: something killed that man, and that something now has its eyes focused on Morgan.

Hard to put this story down! Lots of action and adventure. Looking forward to more stories in this series. Highly recommend
Great characters fun to follow them from book to book. Annelise Ryan has a way of telling a story that makes it hard to put down. That being said.... the story line is getting old. Morgan gets called in to help, Morgan works to find information, Morgan makes stupid decision(s) to put her life in danger, etc.....
Why oh why do women write stories with otherwise smart women protagonists who do really stupid stuff. In this adventure Morgan is nearly killed twice, both times with a "had I but known" chapter ending, because she is racing around the forests, in the dead of night, and doesn't alert anyone where she's going. Why oh why are these women then flabbergasted when their boyfriend, husband, SO, tells them they aren't going to put up with their reckless disregard for themselves or for the feelings of their loved ones.Read it for the dog and the creature.
Absolutely wonderful. I couldn’t put this book down. This is exactly the type of book I needed to reignite my love for reading. The entire series is amazing and I’m sad the next book in the series won’t be out until next year. Still, I love this series and it’s a “cozy” mystery. Also- hopefully not a spoiler but Newt lives and is a good boy in this story.
I started reading this series because it's set in my home state and I like 'creature feature' stories. I have some problems with the series though, mainly because I really don't like the main character all that much. She just does whatever she wants with no care as to how it affects other people. Also, who are these people that are so willing to divulge secret information to a complete stranger? She cold calls people and they spill their guts. Not likely. That being said, I find the books a quick read and it's like a soap opera where the writing isn't all that great (Rita goes off stating "I don’t care for the way proper English is getting pruned away these days. Is it really so hard to use a two-syllable word?" and a couple sentences later replies with "just a sec") , but you kind of get sucked in and can't wait to see what happens next. It's cheesy fun.
