Publishers Weekly Writer to Watch for Spring 2025

"Propulsive...a masterclass...a dazzling, fast-paced pressure-cooker journey about not letting others define who we are, but rather deciding that for ourselves." --San Francisco Chronicle

A gripping literary debut about power and corruption, family, and facing the ghosts of the past.

Mitch Caddo, a young law school graduate and aspiring political fixer, is an outsider in the homeland of his Anishinaabe ancestors. But alongside Tribal President Mack Beck, his childhood friend, Mitch runs the government of the Passage Rouge Nation, and with it, the tribe's Golden Eagle Casino and Hotel. On the eve of Mack's reelection, their tenuous grip on power is threatened by a nationally known activist and politician, Gloria Hawkins, and her young aide, Layla Beck, none other than Mack's estranged sister and Mitch's former love. In their struggle for control over Passage Rouge, the campaigns resort to bare-knuckle political gamesmanship, testing the limits of how far they will go--and what they will sacrifice--to win it all.

But when an accident claims the life of Mitch's mentor, a power broker in the reservation's political scene, the election slides into chaos and pits Mitch against the only family he has. As relationships strain to their breaking points and a peaceful protest threatens to become an all-consuming riot, Mitch and Layla must work together to stop the reservation's descent into violence.

Thrilling and timely, Big Chief is an "unexpected, disturbingly funny" (The New York Times) and unforgettable story about the search for belonging--to an ancestral and spiritual home, to a family, and to a sovereign people at a moment of great historical importance.

without memory there’s no identity…

The content of this novel is but a trying narration of a man who lacks memory of his origin which renders him pathetically malleable … His hunches are correct though sadly ignored during his tenure at this particular land of a once great nation. Which is tragic because while he had actual access to a powerful man in a leadership position, his constant self-sabotage rendered him invisible to himself and, worse, others. Talk about internalized racism brother!

Well developed book

I read this book because the author is coming to our local library on his book tour. Wasn't expecting much, but it turned out I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well constructed without being total stereotypes. Some were total jerks, others left some hoe for redemption. The plot involves elections, politics, corruption...all the usual. Living in this part of the country, the geography and weather were spot on. The book gave me insights into a culture that I live next to, but know little about. Good read! Looking forward to more from this author.

Politics in the Native American community

Mitch Caddo and his friend Mack Beck, tribal president, run the Passage Rouge Nation, including the Golden Eagle Casino and Hotel.  Mitch is working to get Mack re-elected, but his team runs into opposition from Gloria Hawkins and Layla Beck. Layla is Mack's sister and Mitch's love interest.  The fight becomes deadly, and Mitch relies on Layla for help. The politics of this novel was interesting, esp. as it relates to Native Americans vs. the rest of the US. I wasn't that interested in the novel, but I could see how this would be a timely read considering our current political environment.

Interesting

3.5 This is a well-written literary fiction with a lot of insight into different layers of relationships and how those carve paths and choices. I was attracted to the novel because the main character seems to be a morally grey lawyer who fixes political outcomes but also the relevance of casinos in the degradation, power, and greed of people's lives. It took a turn that I wasn't expecting to make it a (new genre to me, kind of read) an interesting fiction read with a lot of relatable moments.
