"A gruesome, action-packed monster novel about a mother and daughter with a terrible secret, on the run from an obsessed and crumbling detective . . . Terrific." --The New York Times Book Review
In Stuart Neville's horror debut, a mother's undying love and a daughter's insatiable hunger carve a bloody trail across the highways of the Southwest.
On a cold December night, single mother Rebecca Carter drives her van into a snowbank to avoid hitting an elk on a desolate mountain highway. She is at the end of her rope, out of money and food. Still, she refuses help from a passing stranger. Rebecca's adolescent daughter, Moonflower, is on the run from a grisly secret, and the last thing they can afford is to be remembered.
Meanwhile, Special Agent Donner of the FBI has been hunting down a gruesome serial killer who drains their victims of blood before severing their spinal cords. As Agent Donner's investigation brings him closer to the Carters, the life that Rebecca has fought so hard to hold together for her daughter becomes increasingly imperiled.
In this riveting, blood-soaked take on the vampire myth, nobody is safe and nothing is certain--not even the line between predator and prey.

This was the biggest disappointment. Had a really good direction but fell flat. It was so drug out, especially in the beginning. Loved the idea but horrible execution. I HATED all the characters. I did hold out hope for Marc but still not crazy about him. Moon flower was so so but her name got on my nerves from the beginning. I wish someone would have ended them all. It was so depressing. The mother, Rebecca, was the biggest problem. She was so controlling. And talk about a serial killer, she was and acted so entitled all the time. Also, be ware of the G D word every other sentence by everyone. Omgosh I wish I could unread this. I sort of want to know what happens in the next book but not sure I’ll purchase it. The ending was horrible and all this for nothing at the end.
It takes a bit to get into, but this is the most realistic portrayal that I've read of what it would mean to be a vampire. Worth a read.
This was a fairly decent horror story. The first 25% dragged, but I wanted to keep reading to see what Moonflower's problem was, and it got better. My major objection to it was all of the letters. I'm not a fan of epistolary novels, so I found them annoying. Would I buy the next one? No, but it was acceptable as a bedtime read for 3-4 nights.
I loved this book! The mother’s love for her daughter was epic and heartbreaking all at the same time. Her moral code and keeping them safe was brilliant. Just when I think I had it figured out there were twists and turns I didn’t see coming.
I loved this book. I went into it blind and am so glad I did. When I figured out what was going on, it was shocking. The characters were phenomenal. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
