NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A guide to the art of journaling—and a meditation on the central questions of life—by the bestselling author of Between Two Kingdoms, with contributions from Hanif Abdurraqib, Jon Batiste, Salman Rushdie, Gloria Steinem, George Saunders, and many more
“The Book of Alchemy proves on every page that a creative response can be found in every moment of life—regardless of what is happening in the world.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love
From the time she was young, Suleika Jaouad has kept a journal. She’s used it to mark life's biggest occasions and to weather its most ferocious storms. Journaling has buoyed her through illness, heartbreak, and the deepest uncertainty. And she is not alone: for so many people, keeping a journal is an essential tool for navigating both the personal peaks and valleys and the collective challenges of modern life. More than ever, we need a space for puzzling through.
In The Book of Alchemy, Suleika explores the art of journaling and shares everything she’s learned about how this life-altering practice can help us tap into that mystical trait that exists in every human: creativity. She has gathered wisdom from one hundred writers, artists, and thinkers in the form of essays and writing prompts. Their insights invite us to inhabit a more inspired life.
A companion through challenging times, The Book of Alchemy is broken into themes ranging from new beginnings to love, loss, and rebuilding. Whether you’re a lifelong journaler or new to the practice, this book gives you the tools, direction, and encouragement to engage with discomfort, ask questions, peel back the layers, dream daringly, uncover your truest self—and in doing so, to learn to hold the unbearably brutal and astonishingly beautiful facts of life in the same palm.

I have struggled to keep a journal for many years and always have lost momentum after a week or two. I got this book in mid April and I am not only continuing to use the prompts on a daily basis but look forward to starting again when I get to the end. Her wonderful reflections set the stage for the poignant stories that begin the days thoughts for the prompts and personal work. I wish I had recieved this book earlier in my life. I’m 78 and looking forward to many more years of writing.
Long time fan of this author and her story. It resonates with everyone who has gone through a difficult journey. This book is more of a guide book, prompts to journal about. I am savoring it as each chapter is meaningful and brings hope and a sense of wonder and joy!
I read the first few pages of The Book of Alchemy at the public library. I was immediately hooked. Needed my own copy to have and to hold! Why? Because Suleika Jaouad has invited 100 persons of note to write a two-page piece plus a writing prompt—enough for 100 days of journaling self-discovery! "Alchemy" is derived from the ancient practice of transforming a base metal into a more valuable one, such as gold. Spiritually, alchemy refers to the transformation of ourselves to a higher level through personal growth and self-discovery. I can say that each of the pages I've written based on the prompts has definitely taken me to a new place I hadn't thought of. I look forward to each day's reading and prompt. So inspiring!
Suleika has curated a collection of writing from some of the best creative minds and turned each narrative into a writing prompt that reaches deep into the heart and imagination. Her words, her story, both generous and wise, are inspiring. Thank you, Suleika.
A beautiful book by a beautiful soul! Suleika, the writer, organizes the book into several chapters related to aspects of the writing life and the work of writing. Within each chapter are short essays by others who write, all together forming a personal and illuminating book, not just on writing but on life. I can't recommend this book highly enough--especially if you've also read Between Two Kingdoms (her first book) and/or seen American Symphony. It's not a how-to book, but an inspiration and an excellent collection of prompts to go with the short essays.
