The vacation of a lifetime ended abruptly with a positive test for COVID-19. Janine was whisked off her luxury dive boat in the Maldives, ordered into isolation, and left to fend for herself on a conservative Islamic island on the other side of the world, terrified and alone.
Though well into the pandemic, the Maldivian government had no clear plan to provide shelter, food, or medicine for tourists required to quarantine. Fighting for her own survival with a language barrier, only $38 cash, worsening symptoms, and a quickly diminishing sense of safety, Janine came face-to-face with her greatest fear: abandonment. She soon realized her many coping mechanisms, and the limiting beliefs behind them, were no longer sustainable.
Intimate conversations with the Sea while reflecting on the burka-draped women who swam in it led Janine to find her True Self and her Higher Power on that island, where she ultimately realized it's impossible to ever really be alone.

What a delightful read!! Janine does an amazing job of painting such a vivid picture and conveying emotions! She does this so well that at times, I realized I had quit breathing and felt as if I was the main character. Although the story line was different from anything in my own life, the emotions are relatable and Janine draws the reader into the story throughout the book. "Live your life. The scary parts don't last that long...Allowing the fear and moving through it is worth it! Fear has purpose. I invite my fears to sit beside me for a chat..." Just as the buffalo intuitively heads face first into a storm knowing that it will get through it quicker, Janine faces her storm with the same courage by leaning into the fear and accepting that being 'fully at peace and full of anxiety' can exist in the same space at the same time. Thank you Janine for the raw, vulnerable story you allowed us all to experience with you.
A very interesting adventure of overcoming fear and hardship as well as the inner conflict that arises from dire situations. All told from the perspective of a woman battling COVID in a foreign country, alone and the surprising beautiful journey that came from it! Strongly recommend this to people of all walks of life. There’s something fire everyone!
Janine shares this incredible real life story of how she was forced to face some of her deepest ,darkest fears. All alone, in a foreign country, with limited resources, a communication barrier, and all by herself, we learn exactly what she went thru. She descriptely shares her story in a way that the reader feels as if they are experiencing the journey with her, thru all of the challenges, emotional ups & downs, and fear of the unknown.Extremely empowering book on overcoming adversity, learning to trust fear, emotional, physical, and spiritual healing. This book has my highest recommendation!!
I had heard a little bit of Janine’s story, so I wanted to read the whole book. Janine has a way with words that as the reader, I felt like I was there with her going through it with her. She also gives the reader thoughts to ponder, and ways for the reader to compare something in their life. This is an incredible book, and Janine, you are an incredible, brave, strong woman. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing that with the world. I will be recommending this book to everyone.
Both Things are True is a memoir about one American woman’s vacation to the Maldives turned nightmare in the fall of 2021.Quarantine memoirs aren’t something I gravitate to, I don’t like reliving the pandemic very much. But after some prompting by various different people in my life, I gave this book a go and am glad I did! By the end of it I was so nervous about what would happen and so proud of the journey they’d gone on! The author does a great job of bringing the reader into her world and really letting us feel her experience. The book itself spans the course of Janine’s quarantine in the Maldives - so a mere 15 days. In those short 2 weeks, she chronicles a very personal story of isolation and self discovery and the battles it took to get through them to the other side.I particularly love the way the book’s tone changes throughout the journey - in the early days it’s a much more fearful voice, it’s afraid of the loneliness and weak and a bit of woe is me (i mean, yes! same!) by the end the voice is strong and welcomes the ability to be alone, that to be alone is not to be lonely. Finding true strength in the battling of a very personal journey through a very scary 2 weeks. The last few chapters (days) are truly page turning, the anxiousness of getting a negative test and the journey to actually return home is nail biting! I’m not here to spoil it, just saying - the further you get the better it is.What an intimate story and slice of personal history amid a broadly tragic time in our collective history. I am thankful she is sharing her story with all of us.
