In the #1 New York Times bestselling series by J. D. Robb comes Connections in Death, a gritty and gripping new novel that follows Eve Dallas as she fights to save the innocent--and serve justice to the guilty--on the streets of New York.

Homicide cop Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband, Roarke, are building a brand-new school and youth shelter. They know that the hard life can lead kids toward dangerous crossroads and, with this new project, they hope to nudge a few more of them onto the right path. For expert help, they hire child psychologist Dr. Rochelle Pickering--whose own brother pulled himself out of a spiral of addiction and crime with Rochelle's support.

Lyle is living with Rochelle while he gets his life together, and he's thrilled to hear about his sister's new job offer. But within hours, triumph is followed by tragedy. Returning from a celebratory dinner with her boyfriend, she finds Lyle dead with a syringe in his lap, and Eve's investigation confirms that this wasn't just another OD. After all his work to get clean, Lyle's been pumped full of poison--and a neighbor with a peephole reports seeing a scruffy, pink-haired girl fleeing the scene.

Now Eve and Roarke must venture into the gang territory where Lyle used to run, and the ugly underground world of tattoo parlors and strip joints where everyone has taken a wrong turn somewhere. They both believe in giving people a second chance. Maybe even a third or fourth. But as far as they're concerned, whoever gave the order on Lyle Pickering's murder has run out of chances...

Connections

Eve and her team investigate when a friend of a friend gets dead. It looks like an overdose, but Eve isn't buying it. She and her team will find out the truth and bring the bag guys to justice.Another fun and interesting addition to the In Death series. I enjoy these books so much - the twists, turns, and investigations. Plus, Eve cracks me up with her interactions with other people.

Connections in Death

Connections in Death by J D RobbIn Death series #48. Futuristic police procedural, thriller with recurring characters. Best read as part of the series to best appreciate all the various characters.A new school and youth shelter needs good staff, and Roark hires Dr Rochelle Pickering, whose own brother has successfully transitioned out of a gang, drugs and crime. The very night she’s hired, he ends up dead from an overdose. Rochelle is adamant that he was clean and wouldn’t have gone back to the lifestyle. Homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas takes on the case. Is it related to the new school or something else? Detective Peabody and the rest of the team investigate, talk to witnesses and neighbors to understand the dead man and what may have been going on in his life.🎧 I have all formats of this book. This reading was by audiobook which is narrated by Susan Erickson who does the full series. The accents and voices of several characters are distinct and consistent making the story feel like coming home. The audiobook voices didn’t initially match what I heard internally from a print copy, but it soon became familiar and comfortable. This format has taken over as a favorite. I love Roarke. Everyone does. The narrator makes the whole cast come alive.Gripping and exciting. As usual.

Really good!

JD Robb is always an excellent read. She uses all the characters we have come to know and love. Her books are always fast paced and intriguing. Love her books and will sometimes read her older ones to bring back good memories.

A Bittersweet Addition

While, of course, J.D. Robb’s novels deal with murder and other illegal chaos, I’d say the majority don’t deal with events that make one sad. While there are obvious exceptions - the murders of Nixie Swisher’s family, Bart Minnock, and Craig Foster come to mind - most either do not involve the death of good people or the individual is older and could be considered to have led a full life. It is harder when, as with the individuals mentioned above, the murder deals with good people who died young, especially children. In this book, the first death involves a young character who started down a wrong path, but who managed to pull themselves out of the bad and the hard and had just started living in the good and the joyful. Their death hits not just the reader as being sad, but also motivates Eve Dallas as well. All that being said, the story is interesting with vivid, complicated characters. It is a compelling read and I highly recommend it.
