A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of America's most enduring authors
A Penguin Classic
In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.
The masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah's Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century.
This edition features an introduction by David Wyatt.

Steinbeck has a way of expressing complex and unique human emotions in a concise and beautiful way. I found myself highlighting often in this book, which isn’t something I do often. A bit long, probably longer than it needed to be, but there are some very well written characters in this story that make each page precious.
Quite possibly the best book I’ve ever read. I’ve been on this earth for decades. And in that time I’ve read many books. This tops them all. It might be so good because it’s 75 years old (I think). And it all holds true. We feel like our situation is unique and especially terrible. Turns out, we’re just human. And we’ve been battling the same internal demons of jealousy, pride, fear, and so on since at least the biblical days. Something is deeply comforting about that fact. I think this book has softened me and I want to carry the lessons that it taught me (without being didactic) through my life. I want to be more like Lee.
Classic tale of human emotion and human history. Wisdom, folly, love, sin, redemption, lust anger, and pain. It is all here.
It’s an understatement and stated by many…Steinbeck is a genius. If I were an English teacher, I would make this a “must read”.
Centennial edition is the most beautiful covers of these books ever. And this east of eden is one of the best of them all
