NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it's too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.

AN ELLE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore who just wrote the world's first comprehensive encyclopaedia of faeries. She's learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Ones on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival Wendell Bambleby.

Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He's an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother and in search of a door back to his realm. And despite Emily's feelings for Bambleby, she's not ready to accept his proposal of marriage: Loving one of the Fair Folk comes with secrets and dangers.

She also has a new project to focus on: a map of the realms of faerie. While she is preparing her research, Bambleby lands her in trouble yet again, when assassins sent by his mother invade Cambridge. Now Bambleby and Emily are on another adventure, this time to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambleby's realm and the key to freeing him from his family's dark plans.

But with new relationships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors and of her own heart.

marvelous

What a marvelously inventive read! I love the character of Emily - she is almost autistic in her manner - but still fierce. Wendell is interesting, but spent much of this tale indisposed. Rose was the perfect villain to hurry the plot along. Faerie is, always, mind numbing. Truly, a wonderful read. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Good but not as good as the first book

This was a great sequel to the first book, but overall I enjoyed the first book more. Book 2 definitely feels like a middle book since it is heavily being set up for book 3. I felt like the goals in this book where a little more all over the place. Supposedly they were traveling for research of another book topic while also potentially trying to find these missing scholars while also trying to find Wendell’s door to his kingdom. These goals did overlap but it did clash with the motivations of some of the new characters. This book is written like the first one where we are reading from Emily’s journal entries. I have been enjoying this writing style and I feel like it fits well with this series. I do enjoy getting a random entry from Wendell and the author does a perfect job of capturing his voice through his writing.Wendell and Emily are traveling to another rural location to try to find a ‘nexus’ which would allow Wendell to access his kingdom. Along for the ride is Professor Rose and Emily’s niece. The villagers do not play as big of a part in this book as the villagers did in book 1. But we do get another visit from Poe which I loved and there is a new farie character as well which I enjoyed (Snowbell).Again, similar to the first book, the ending feels a little rushed and convoluted. It is hard to know for sure what happened mainly because Emily’s writing has gaps in her memory. We do get more farie interactions and with different types of faries. In the first book Emily used her extensive farie knowledge and tricks when interacting with these faires, but it felt more like in this book she was escaping these faires mainly by Wendell’s magicked cloak. It felt a little more like a convenient out, but this is a comfort read so I did not mind so much.I did enjoy the first book more, but I still overall am enjoying this series and I am curious to see how book 3 ends.

A good female character

A little nerdy a lot of heart. Emily march ahead into danger, her thirst for knowledge always at the front of hear mind, taking notes and scrabbling

Quite imaginative and different - ready for #3!

Been reading and listening to a lot of Romantasy lately and while enjoyable, there’s a lot of recycling of the same themes. I love the slightly ASD Emily and unpredictable Wendell!

Love the dark fey

Fit expectations. A great mix of romance, action and dangerous (at times downright sinister) fey with interesting characters and a intriguing alternate earth with what if the dark fey of myths are real. A solid sequel.
